A honing mandrel having an elongated body with a passageway extending along the length thereof including at least one open sided portion, the mandrel including an abrasive assembly positioned for radial movement in the open sided passageway portion having a radial outer surface formed of an abrasive material and a radial inner portion including spaced surfaces acutely angularly oriented relative to the axis of the mandrel body, cooperatively engageable surfaces on the abrasive assembly and on the body to prevent relative axial movement but not relative radial movement therebetween, and an operator member positioned in the passageway for axial movement therein, the operator member having surface portions thereon acutely angularly oriented relative to the axis of the mandrel body and positioned to make surface-to-surface slidable engagement with respective ones of the inner surfaces on the abrasive assembly whereby axial movements of the operator member in one direction relative to the abrasive assembly will produce radial movement of the abrasive assembly in an outward radial direction, the abrasive assembly and the operator member having adjacent side surfaces with other engaged portions including cooperatively engageable surfaces formed thereon which produce radial movement of the abrasive assembly in an inward direction when the operator member is moved in an axial direction opposite from the axial direction that produced the radial outward movement of the abrasive assembly.

Honing mandrel construction

A gaging head assembly for use on dial bore gages and the like for gaging the diameter and surface characteristics of cylindrical work surfaces including an elongated tubular member having first and second end portions and an opening extending therethrough, an adjustment member positioned for axial movement in the opening, the tubular member being attachable at the first end portion to a dial bore gage and having pairs of opposed work engaging elements adjacent to the second end portion for movement primarily in a radial direction to change the gaging diameter thereof, the adjustment member having a tapered end portion located inwardly of the work engaging elements to simultaneously engage and radially move the pairs of opposed work engaging elements during axial movements thereof, one of the pairs of opposed work gaging elements extending radially outwardly a greater distance than the other pair of opposed elements in all positions of adjustment of the adjustment member. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the work engaging elements include work engaging ball-like elements, and in another embodiment the elements are formed as integral parts of the tubular member between axially extending slots which extend into the tubular member from the second end portion thereof.

Gaging head for use on dial bore gages

An improved dial bore gage having an adjustment mechanism associated therewith for adjusting the relative axial positions of the probe and dial portions of the gage, the adjustment mechanism including a first member operatively connected to the dial portion of the gage having a first threaded portion associated therewith of a predetermined thread pitch, a second member operatively connected to the probe portion of the gage having a second threaded portion associated therewith of a different predetermined thread pitch, and an adjustment member rotatably mounted to the first and second members, the adjustment member having spaced threaded portions to correspond to and mate with the threaded portions on the first and second members whereby rotation of the adjustment member will produce relative axial movement between the first and second members and this in turn will produce changes in the gage setting for each position thereof. The present dial bore gage also includes a mechanism for releasing pressure on the gaging contacts of the gate to facilitate movement into and out of a bore to be gaged and mechanisms for providing both axial and angular backlash compensation between the probe and dial portions of the gage.

In dial bore gages

A gage support device for mounting on a setting fixture having spaced opposed fixture setting surfaces in position to support by suspending a gage such as a dial bore gage in position with the contact portion of the gage including the work engaging contacts positioned between the fixture setting surfaces. The support device has adjustment features that can be adjusted so that the device can accomodate gages of different sizes and ranges including an adjustment feature for adjusting the height at which the gage is supported on the setting fixtures, an adjustment feature for adjusting the horizontal position at which the gage is supported on the setting fixture, and an adjustment feature for adjusting the angular orientation of the gage as it is supported relative to the setting fixture.

An apparatus adapted to be installed for rotation on a machine and having a portion for receiving and supporting a working assembly such as a honing mandrel and a mounting adapter therefor including a mounting member for attaching the apparatus to a machine a first member having a first portion at one end for attaching to the mounting member and a tubular portion at the opposite end having a first bore of predetermined diameter adjacent to the inner end thereof and a second bore portion of greater diameter extending to the opposite end thereof, a second member positioned extending into the bore in the first member from the opposite end thereof and having an internal bore therein, the second member being constructed to permit some bending thereof, a portion on the outside diameter of the second member being the same as the predetermined diameter of the first bore portion of the first member for engagement therewith, the rest of the second member being of less diameter than the second bore portion, first and second pairs of opposed radially extending threaded members mounted in the first member adjacent the opposite end thereof for engagement with the second member and adjustable to establish the angular orientation of the opposite end portion of the second member, and other pairs of opposed radially extending threaded members in the first member engageable with the mounting member and adjustable to relocate the mandrel axis to compensate for mandrel wear.

An alignment fixture for use with an adjustable spindle nose device that rotatably supports a working member such as a honing mandrel to axially align the mandrel so that it rotates about a fixed axis along its length, the fixture comprising a housing having attached structure for mounting on a machine adjacent to a rotatable member to be aligned, an adjustable contact assembly including a first contact member mounted on the housing in position to engage the member to be aligned at one location therealong, a second contact assembly including a second contact member spaced from the first contact member for engaging the member to be aligned, apparatus for movably supporting the second contact assembly on the housing in position so that the second contact member is biased into engagement with the member to be aligned at a location axially spaced from the adjustable contact, an indicator assembly on the housing including a graduated scale and an indicator member movable relative to the scale, an operative connection between the second contact assembly and the movable indicator member whereby the indicator member indicates on the scale the position of the second contact member relative to the first contact member when both contacts are engaged with the member to be aligned, and apparatus for adjusting the position of the housing and the first and second contact assemblies thereon relative to the member after it is aligned to laterally locate the rotatable member.

An adapter for a honing mandrel for finishing the interior surfaces of bores using a honing mandrel having an abrasive member positioned in an opening therein, a wedge member for radial adjustment of the abrasive member during a honing operation to maintain the abrasive member engaged with the bore being honed, the improvements comprising an adapter having means for receiving and supporting the honing mandrel, the adapter including a wedge engaging member adjustable thereon to engage the wedge member to permit longitudinal movement thereof in the mandrel but to prevent radial movement thereof, the adapter also including a pair of angularly related mandrel engaging and locating surfaces against which the mandrel is positioned during installation on the adapter, a threaded member adjustable in the adapter to maintain the mandrel against said locating surfaces, an elongated member having one end attached to said adapter and on an opposite end, said elongated member being biased under spring tension into engagement with the abrasive member on the mandrel to maintain the abrasive member under longitudinal and radial spring tension and to maintain contact between the wedge member and the abrasive member even when the wedge member is being retracted, and a radially extending spring member mounted on the adapter having an inner end portion anchored to the adapter and an opposite outer end portion engageable with the one end of the elongated member.

Adapter for honing mandrels

A device for coupling members such as driving and driven members so as to permit limited relative angular movement therebetween including a first member having an end with a bore extending thereinto, the bore having a polygonal shaped bore portion formed by a plurality of flat surfaces, a coupling portion on the other member having a polygonal shaped head formed by a plurality of side surfaces which are rounded axially and an end surface, the respective rounded surfaces on the head being engageable with respective flat surfaces of the polygonal shaped bore portion, a cross-bore through the first member intersecting the bore therein, and a cross-bore through the coupling portion in position to register with the cross-bore in the first member, a pin member extending through the registered bores to hold the members together and yet permit some relative angular movement therebetween, a bearing member positioned in the bore in the first member in position to engage the end surface of the head on the coupling portion when the members are connected together, the diameter of the coupling portion being somewhat smaller than the diameter of the bore in the first member so that the space formed therebetween limits the amount of possible relative angular movement therebetween.

A precision honing mandrel including a tubular honing member having a helical, straight or other shaped groove therethrough, a substantially cylindrical outer surface, a tapered inner surface, and a layer of a relatively hard wear resistant abrasive substance applied to the cylindrical outer surface, an arbor for mounting said honing member including a first arbor portion for mounting on a honing machine, and a tapered second arbor portion for receiving said honing member thereon, a guide member mounted on the opposite side of the honing member from the first arbor portion, said guide member having an end surface in abutment with one end of the honing member and a tapered inner surface for cooperating with the tapered arbor portion, a keyway formed in said tapered arbor portion and aligned slots in the honing member and in the guide member adjacent the abutting ends thereof, a key member positioned to cooperate with said aligned slots and with said keyway to prevent relative rotational movement between the honing member, the guide member and the arbor, and an adjustment member having a first portion threadedly engageable with said arbor and a second portion engageable with said guide member, adjustment of said adjustment member adjusting the axial portion of said honing member on said tapered second arbor portion.

A gaging fixture for presetting the radially extended position of a stationary work engaging contact on a dial bore gage or like instrument, wherein the stationary work engaging contact is mounted on a member threadedly engaged with the gage, which member carries a threaded locking member for locking the threaded member and the stationary work engaging contact thereon in predetermined and determinable positions of adjustment, said fixture including a first member having a portion for engaging the member on which the stationary work gaging contact is located, and a second member movable axially and rotatably relative to the first member and having a portion thereof engageable with the member for locking the stationary work engaging contact in predetermined radial positions, the portions of the said first and second members being constructed and positioned to simultaneously engage the member on which the stationary work engaging contact is located and the locking member associated therewith in only one predetermined relative position, and cooperating indicator means on said relatively movable members calibrated to indicate the radially extended position of the stationary work engaging contact for any setting of the fixture over a predetermined range of movement of the threaded member on which the stationary work engaging contact is located.

A dial bore gauge for measuring the size and surface characteristics of internal surfaces including surfaces which may include spaced portions to be gauged, said gauge including a gauging portion having spaced work engaging elements thereon, a dial portion for indicating the condition of the work engaging portions, members operatively connecting the gauging portions with the dial portion, and an actuator element operatively connected to the gauging portions and movable between different selected positions in one of which at least one of the work engaging elements is in a retracted condition and in another of which all of the work engaging elements are in their work engaging positions.

A rechargeable applicator for dispensing substances especially substances in a foam or foam-like condition including dispensing them into body cavities or elsewhere, the applicator includes a pressurized container having one end which is normally closed by a valve and filled with a substance under pressure for dispensing therefrom, and cooperatively associated with the container is an expandable chamber into which some of the contents of the container can be expelled in a foam or foam-like condition when the container is withdrawn but not separated from the chamber, the container thereafter serving as a plunger for expelling the contents of the chamber into a body cavity or elsewhere where the substance is to be used.
