Method for controlling a defrost cycle in a freezer so the defrost cycle begins at the end of a compressor operation. For the defrost cycle to begin, the compressor must have been operating for a minimum duration or the compressor must operate for a period which is a certain minimum percentage of a previous compressor operating time.

Defrost control method for reducing freezer package temperature deviation

An insulated door for use in a refrigerator having an ice and water through the door dispenser is made by attaching a liner for housing the dispenser on the rear face of the door in line with a front opening. The liner is secured to the door as are the hinge bearings and a tube extends between the liner and the lower hinge bearing for conducting electrical wires and a water tube. The only opening in the liner is at a point to receive ice cubes from the dispenser in the refrigerator and this opening is covered prior to foaming. The door is placed in a foaming fixture which completely enclosed and supports the door and the liner and foam is injected so that the foam, when expanded and hardened, completely covers the rear face of the door. After the door is removed from the foaming fixture, the thin layer of foam at the inlet opening is cut away and the door is completed by adding the liner and the gaskets and other hardware as well as the dispensing unit itself.

Refrigerator door construction

A refrigerator has upper and lower compartments each closed by separate doors mounted on the cabinet and separated from each other by a partition. At the front of the partition is a mullion assembly including a mullion cover arranged flush with the front face of the cabinet and behind the mullion cover is a mullion strap having end portions at each end projecting beyond the mullion cover behind the front face of the cabinet where screws clamp the mullion strap ends to the rear of the front face of the cabinet to provide a brace between the two sides of the cabinet and another set of screws secure the mullion cover to the mullion strap adjacent each end. The mullion strap has a flat center section for flexibility during assembly, while each end portion is in the form of a forward opening channel which forms a box construction with the mullion cover. The flanges of the channel have projecting serrations arranged to penetrate the finish and providing grounding contact between the mullion strap and both the mullion cover and the shell. The two screws at each end also serve to mount a hinge bracket which serves as the lower hinge for the upper door and the upper hinge for the lower door.

Refrigerator mullion construction

A refrigerated cabinet assembly has an open compressor compartment at the lower rear side thereof and the compartment is defined by the side walls of the cabinet and an insulation bottom support having a vertically extending wall portion. The refrigeration compressor is secured to a mounting plate which at one side is secured to a transverse rail extending between the two wall portions, while the mounting plate on the side opposite said rail has a projecting tongue received in an elastomeric bushing mounted in an opening on said vertically extending wall portion, with the bushing extending into and being surrounded by the rigid insulating foam.

Refrigeration compressor mount

A low cost automatic ice cube maker of simplified construction for use in the freezer compartment of a domestic refrigerator. The ice maker includes a one-piece, molded plastic bail or sensing arm for monitoring the level of ice cubes in an underlying storage bin. The movable bail includes fingerlike resilient projection extending radially from one of the end portions of the bail. The distal end of the projection engages a portion of the ice maker fixed in position relative to the movable bail wherein the resilient projection functions as a springlike member biasing the bail toward a lowermost position. The ice maker also includes a pivotally mounted ice tray that can be easily snapped out of its ice making position for removal and cleaning at a location outside the freezer compartment. An externally accessible mechanism for actuating a test switch of the internal control circuit of the ice maker is provided to facilitate servicing of the ice maker.

An ice cube storage bin located beneath an automatic ice maker of a domestic refrigerator contains a pair of elongated ice dispensing rams that reciprocate along parallel lines, one of the rams moving toward the front of the bin, as the other moves toward the rear. The rams are interconnected by a pulley mounted belt that pulls one ram to the rear of the bin, as the other ram is pushed toward the front of the bin by a drive mechanism. The drive mechanism includes a pair of cam discs eccentrically mounted in opposed relation on a common motor shaft located outside of the bin adjacent its rear wall. A pair of resilient lever arms, having their top ends pivotally mounted to the outside of the rear wall of the bin and their bottom ends pivotally connected to the rearward ends of the rams which extend from the interior of the bin, are engaged at their intermediate portions by the rotating cam discs wherein the rams are alternately pushed by the bottom ends of the lever arms toward the front of the bin. The use of dual reciprocating rams, and the simplified push-pull drive means including the pulley mounted belt and the eccentric cam discs, provide a highly efficent and reliable ice dispensing mechanism.

In a refrigerator having a cabinet which defines an opening, an ice dispensing apparatus within the opening dispenses ice pieces through a delivery chute. An inner ice door is mounted on hinges within the delivery chute and movable to a first position which blocks the delivery chute from the passage of ice pieces, or to a second position which allows the passage of ice pieces through the delivery chute. An ice guard is provided which protects the hinges from ice pieces which pass from the ice dispensing apparatus through the delivery chute, as well as from becoming frozen in the first closed position. The ice guard comprises a sweeper member which is biased against the inner ice door and sweeps against it as the inner ice door is moved from the first to the second position, thus removing any ice pieces or water from the inner ice door.

Ice door mechanism

The door-mounted water and ice cube dispenser of a refrigerator is supplied with chilled water and electrical power by a water conveying conduit and a plurality of electrical conductors which together pass through a hollow pintle and socket portion of a lower hinge assembly pivotally supporting the refrigerator door. To facilitate removal of the door from the associated refrigerator cabinet, the lower end of the conduit is connected to an end of a chilled water supply line by a union type coupling, the lower ends of the conductors being connected to a plug engageable with an associated power supplying socket fixed to the refrigerator cabinet. The conduit and conductors extend upwardly from the lower hinge assembly to the dispenser location via the interior of an elongated, rigid, tubelike member that isolates the conduit and conductors from any thermal insulating material or other obstructions filling the interior volume of the door. The tubelike member, by permitting unimpeded movement of the conduit and conductors contained therein, precludes localized twisting and untwisting of the conduit and conductors at any specific point along their respective lengths to preclude fatigue breaks of the conduit or conductors resulting from repeated opening and closing of the door.
