A method for motion compensation includes obtaining measurements related to heave at a surface of a rig, transmitting the measurements to a processor, and automatically transmitting a control signal from the processor to a motion compensation component in response to the measurements. The motion compensation component is a slip joint and is attached to a drill string located in the wellbore. The method may also include activating the motion compensation component to compensate for motion in response to the signal and preventing axial or rotational movement of a portion of the drill string below the motion compensation component.

Method for motion compensation using wired drill pipe

A service tool string (,) is releasably attached to a bottom hole assembly (,) and forms a production string as well as a work string. The tool (,) has a mandrel (,) and a slide valve assembly (,) mounted on the mandrel for relative sliding movement. Crossover ports (,) are provided in the mandrel (,) and the slide valve assembly (,). Slide valve assembly (,) moves by gravity and spring action when not contacted by the bottom hole assembly (,) to a position in which ports (,) are blocked as shown in FIG.,B. Upon contact of slidable valve assembly (,) with the bottom hole assembly (,), slide valve assembly is moved upwardly for alignment of ports (,) as shown in FIGS.,B and,B. An equalizing valve (,) as shown in FIGS.,is effective to equalize the fluid pressure within the bottom hole assembly (,) with the fluid pressure outside the perforated casing section (,) so that in a reverse position as shown in FIG.,B, the service tool (,) can be lifted to a position above the upper packer assembly (,) and above the bottom hole assembly (,). A diverter ball (,) seated on a ball catcher (,) is effective to divert the fracturing fluid outwardly through crossover ports (,) as shown in FIG.,B for downward flow through the annulus (,) into the formation adjacent the perforated casing section (,).
