Generating luminance uniformity in a rear projection display system is provided. The method comprises calculating luminance generated by a projector on a rear projection screen relative to a design eye position in front of the screen. A baseline luminance is determined for each primary color according to the luminance. Luminance of all locations on the screen is corrected toward the baseline. Correction is allocated between an optical filter and electronic correction. Luminance is measured at calibration points on the screen. The electronic correction for a color image is adjusted according to the allocation and the luminance at the calibration points to produce a corrected color image for projection from the projector. The corrected color image is projected from the projector and through the optical filter. The optical filter is configured to dim specified areas within the corrected color image according to the allocation.

Simulation display system, spatial image luminance uniformity

Apparatus and methods for displaying High Dynamic Range (HDR) imagery on a large screen suitable for viewing by a large audience in theater-size venues or domed simulators or iMax-like venues. A dual modulation method of projecting onto the front of an active projection screen and an array of high intensity light (e.g., diodes) projects the most significant bits (MSB) of the image onto the back of the screen while a standard dynamic range (SDR) video projector projects the least significant bits (LSB) of the onto the front of the screen. The result is a much higher brightness image than the projector alone can produce.

Active screen for large venue and dome high dynamic range image projection

A video projector, a shutter mechanism for a video projector, and a method for providing a visible image and an infrared image. The shutter includes first regions that filter out visible light and second regions that filter out infrared light. The second regions are arranged between adjacent first regions. The shutter can be synchronized with an image modulator that alternately outputs visible light images and infrared images. The infrared images can be viewed using night vision goggles, allowing night vision goggle users to train in a simulated environment.

High efficiency motion blur reduction and infrared projection

A video projector, a shutter mechanism for a video projector, and a method for reducing image blur. A shutter can include regions that are 100% transmissive to light and regions that are more than 0% transmissive (but less than 100% transmissive). The more than 0% transmissive regions raise the perceived brightness of the image relative to a shutter with 0% transmissive regions, enabling the 100% transmissive regions to be smaller. The smaller 100% transmissive regions result in reduced image blur. The more than 0% transmissive regions can include a filter that filters out certain portions of the electromagnetic spectrum of the image to provide a perceived corrected image.

High efficiency motion blur reduction

The present disclosure is generally directed toward a visual image projection and display system including a motion platform, a toroidal constant vertical resolution surface having a bottom portion mounted to the motion platform and capable of displaying a single substantially constant vertical resolution image by blending portions of adjacent projected images on the toroidal constant vertical resolution surface, a top surface screen intersecting the top portion of the constant vertical resolution surface defined by a circular azimuth curve, and a set of image projectors. The set of image projectors include a radial array of image projectors mounted on the motion platform that project a corresponding series of images via at least one mirror attached to the motion platform onto a convex portion of the toroidal constant vertical resolution surface, and at least one image projector that projects an image on the top surface screen.

Motion-based system using a constant vertical resolution toroidal display

The present disclosure is generally directed to methods of creating and a visual image projection and display system including a tessellation of toroidal constant vertical resolution surfaces to display a single substantially constant vertical resolution image by blending projected images on adjacent constant vertical resolution surfaces. Each toroidal constant vertical resolution surface is defined by any horizontal section of the constant vertical resolution surface normal to a central vertical axis of the tessellation of constant vertical resolution surfaces being a constant distance from the central vertical axis. The system further includes a top surface screen intersecting the tessellation of toroidal constant vertical resolution surfaces defined by a circular azimuth curve, and a set of image projectors corresponding to each constant vertical resolution surface of the tessellation of toroidal constant vertical resolution surfaces and the top surface screen.

Method for creating and a system for using a constant vertical resolution toroidal display

A method and apparatus for a uniform resolution display screen. In one embodiment, the uniform resolution display screen comprises a surface of the uniform resolution display screen having a curvature configured to display images with a uniform resolution across the display screen. The curvature is based on a projection distance from a projector to the uniform resolution display screen and a viewing distance from an eyepoint of an observer to the uniform resolution display screen. The geometry of the display screen is configured to display images associated with a high definition imaging format.

Method and apparatus for a wide field of view display

Methods, apparatuses, and flight simulators are disclosed to present infrared images detectable by night vision devices. A video signal may be received. The video signal may be configured to generate a viewable image substantially within a human visible spectrum. The video signal may include one or more of a red component, a green component, and a blue component. The video signal also may be configured to generate one or more infrared images. The one or more infrared images may be substantially outside the human visible spectrum and may have an infrared component detectable by a night vision device. In response to the video signal, the red and green components may be separately modulated to generate red and green portions of the viewable image. The blue component and the infrared component may be collectively modulated to generate a blue portion of the viewable image and the one or more infrared images.

Generating images for detection by night vision devices

A training system and method for use of simulated night vision goggles (NVG) which provides the full dynamic range of NVG simulation including low intensity, medium intensity and high intensity irradiance images of night-time terrain. Each of three 12-bit video signals are allocated to a preselected portion or all of the total irradiance range representing scene elements corresponding to low, medium and high light intensity and a video camera scans and converts the resultant generated image to preserve its resolution and dynamic range. The image is viewable in the simulated goggles.

Night vision goggles training system

A visual display system and method for full and realistic stimulation of night vision goggles according to the present invention includes a display system for stimulating night vision goggles across a large dynamic range. The display system includes a high resolution head tracked area of interest display for a rear projection video display. The system time multiplexes the display of raster and calligraphic images in the area of interest. The system also includes a method of calligraphic light point projection that conserves power by using a head tracked slow speed high sensitivity electromagnetic deflection system to position an electron beam which is modulated in X-Y position in a calligraphic fashion by a high speed secondary yoke to create intense light point images for the area of interest display.
