The present invention relates to novel aromatic isocyanates obtained by partially hydrogenating naphthalene as well as the processes for preparing the same, and to their use as an isocyanate component in the production of polyurethanes.

Tetralin isocyanates

This invention relates to a process for the preparation an epoxide-reactive compound having a functionality of at least 3, a molecular weight of from about 250 to about 1,900, and an OH number of from about 85 to about 1,400. This process comprises reacting (a) an organic compound which is free of ether groups, having a molecular weight of from about 60 to about 600, and containing from about 2 to about 8 reactive sites; with (b) cyanuric chloride; optionally, in the presence of (c) one or more catalysts; wherein the functionality of the resultant epoxide-reactive compound equals three times the functionality of (a) said organic compound minus three. This invention also relates to further reacting the epoxide-reactive compound produced by the above process with an alkylene oxide, optionally in the presence of a catalyst to form a polyether polyol having a functionality of at least about 3, a molecular weight of from about 300 to about 18,000, and an OH number of from about 10 to about 565.

Polyether polyols with increased functionality

This invention relates to a process for the preparation of a polyether polyol having a functionality of at least about 3, a molecular weight of from about 560 to about 35,000 and an OH number of from about 10 to about 1,100. This process comprises reacting (a) a polyether polyol containing one or more ether groups, having a functionality of about 2 to about 8, a molecular weight of about 106 to about 12,000, and an OH number of about 28 to about 1,400, with (b) cyanuric chloride, optionally, in the presence of (c) one or more catalysts; wherein the functionality of the resultant polyether polyols equals three times the functionality of (a) said polyether polyol, minus three. This invention also relates to the process of reacting a polyether polyol, formed by the stated reaction with cyanuric chloride, with an alkylene oxide, optionally in the presence of a catalyst, to form a polyether polyol that has a higher molecular weight and a functionality greater than or equal to the functionality of the polyether polyol used as the starter in this process.

This invention relates to novel polyether polyols and to a process for their production. These polyether polyols are prepared by forming a polyhydroxyl group containing component in a first step by the reaction of a triazole-group containing compound with a compound that contains at least one functional group that is capable of reacting with the amine groups of the triazole group containing compound, and reacting the hydroxyl-group containing component with an alkylene oxide to form the polyether polyol of the invention. The present invention also relates to isocyanate-reactive compositions comprising these novel polyether polyols, and to a process for the production of a polyurethane comprising reacting a polyisocyanate with the novel polyether polyols of the present invention.

This invention relates to a process for the purification of polyether polyols. This process enables the removal of residual alkaline metal catalyst from produced polyether polyol. It comprises a) adding glycerine to a polyether polyol that contains Group IA alkaline metal catalyst to form a precipitate, and b) separating the precipitate formed in a) to provide a purified polyether polyol. The present invention also relates to the purified polyether polyol produced by this process, the precipitate produced by this process, and the use of the precipitate as an alkaline metal catalyst in a process for the production of polyether polyols.

Process for the removal of alkalinity in the manufacture of polyether

A polyisocyanate having an acid value of at least 0.01% HCl is used to produce polyisocyanate, polyisocyanurate and polyurethane urea foams with an HCFC blowing agent. The use of such a polyisocyanate is advantageous because the polyisocyanate does not cause significant decomposition of the HCFC blowing agent.

An organic acid having at least two carboxylic acid groups, no tertiary amino groups and a pK.sub.a of up to 3.1 is added to an HCFC blowing agent or to a composition, preferably an isocyanate-reactive composition, in which an HCFC blowing agent is present to reduce decomposition of the HCFC blowing agent. The resultant compositions are useful in the production of polyisocyanurate, polyurethane and/or polyurea foams.
