A magnetic levitation apparatus supports a magnetic element in a magnetic field. A control system controls a variable magnetic field to maintain the magnetic element at an equilibrium location relative to an unstable axis. In some embodiments the variable magnetic field has a gradient in the direction of the unstable axis but no field component. In some embodiments the magnetic field is provided by an array of four discrete magnets. In some embodiments additional magnets provide increased field intensity at the equilibrium location this increases stability of the levitated magnetic element against overturning. Light and electrical power may be supplied to the levitating magnetic element.

Magnetic levitation apparatus

A welded wire lathing material for mounting stucco plaster and the like onto a building frame. This lathing material comprises intersecting transverse and primary longitudinal strands substantially located in a first plane. It also comprises secondary longitudinal strands also substantially placed in first plane and closely spaced with, some of primary longitudinal strands, thus forming longitudinal slots located at predetermined spaced intervals extending across the lathing material. The slots are wider than the shaft, but narrower than the head, of fasteners predetermined for attaching the lath to building frames. The longitudinal and transverse strands are welded together where they intersect to form a rectangular mesh approximately located in the first plane. In addition, spacing furrs are formed in the mesh by bending the transverse strands into indentations perpendicular to, and on one side of, the first plane, at predetermined space intervals and located away from points of intersection with the longitudinal strands such that the tip of the indentations defines a second plane away from the first plane. This furring structure allows the lathing material to be kept mostly separated from a building frame when it is placed with the indentations against the building frame. This structure together with shaping and flattening of the longitudinal strands allows the lath to be easily packaged into rolls.

Twin track wire lath

A self-furring wire lath has stiffening trusses. In a preferred embodiment the lath comprises a grid of intersecting transverse and longitudinal wires welded at their intersections. Stiffening trusses are formed at bent sections in the transverse wires by first longitudinal wires affixed at the shoulders of the bent sections and second longitudinal wires affixed on the bent sections. A barrier layer is disposed between the first and second longitudinal wires. A building paper backing may be affixed to the barrier layer. The lath reduces cracking and wastage of stucco while remaining easy to work with.

Self-stiffened welded wire lath assembly

A shear wall system comprises stucco fasteners consisting of an elongated first portion that is driven into a wood frame wall, and an elongated second portion that is completely embedded in a stucco wall panel. In one embodiment, the fasteners consist of an assembly having a first element that is driven into the wood frame wall, and a second annular element receiving a portion of the first element and that is embedded rigidly into the cement stucco wall. Ductile movement of the fastener components with respect to wood frame wall and the stucco wall provides energy dissipation.

Stucco fastening system

The invention relates to metal wire mesh having a plurality of longitudinal wires and a plurality of transverse wires. The longitudinal wires of the mesh are provided with shaped areas wherein the moment of inertia of said shaped areas about the neutral axis parallel to the plane of the mesh is 90 percent or less of the moment of inertia of said shaped areas about the neutral axis vertical to the plane of the mesh. This substantially reduces the problem of curvature set when metal wire mesh is rolled for packaging or transport and attempts are made to unroll prior to use.

Wire mesh having flattened strands

Apparatus is disclosed for detecting irregularities or flaws in seams such as the seams of cans. The apparatus includes means for irradiating the surface of the seam to produce reflected radiation signals, a plurality of radiation sensors, each having a selected field of view of the surface, and each producing sensor output signals dependent on reflected radiation signals received within such field of view. A signal processing means receives sensor output signals for a succession of fields of view along the longitudinal length of the seam and derives therefrom signal data representing a dimensional feature of the seam. Signl comparison means compares such derived data with signal data representing an acceptable dimensional limit and produces a rejection signal in the event that the dimensional feature does not fall within the limit. Means for classifying the nature of an irregularity is also disclosed, as is transport means for the movement of seams though the field of view of the sensors.
