An inker for a printing press in which an excess of ink is applied to the surface (45) of a resilient roller and the ink is metered by a metering member (10') to form a film of controlled thickness on the resilient roller surface. The metering member is a long strip including a polished metering surface and a polished support surface (26) which intersect to form a polished metering edge (25), the polished support surface (26) intersecting with a polished trailing surface (28a) to form a polished trailing edge (28b). The metering edge (25) and trailing edge (28b) are closely spaced such that the entire support surface is indented into the resilient roller surface for metering a film (130) of ink and for assuring that the ink will separate cleanly from the metering member at the trailing edge (28b). The leading or metering edge (25) is indented into the resilient roller surface (45) further than the trailing edge (28b) which results in the formation of a film (130), the thickness of which does not change substantially with a change in press speed.

Ink metering apparatus

An automatic sheet register control system for a printing press comprising: photocells (81-85) sensing the position of a sheet (5) relative to printing cylinder (48U); and a computer (86-89) to generate signals to actuators (75a, 75b) to adjust the length of bands (16a, 16b) which carry the sheets (5) to establish and control register of the sheet (5) relative to the printing cylinder (48U).

Planetary conveyor system

An ink metering member (10') to form a thin film (130) of ink on a resilient roller surface (45) wherein the metering member comprises a hard, elongated strip having a first polished leading edge (25) and a second polished trailing edge (28b) formed on each side of a polished support surface (26) urged into pressure indented relationship with the resilient roller. The metering member further has a relieved area (27) formed in a lower surface (28) adjacent the lower trailing edge (28b) to prevent accumulation of ink which would be transferred to the roller surface downstream from the trailing edge. The trailing edge (28b) is sufficiently close to the leading edge (25) to assure simultaneous indentation into the resilient roller to prevent accumulation of ink on the polished support surface (26).

An apparatus for applying silicone polymer coating to a web substrate comprising: a roll having a resilient surface; means to rotate the roll; a metering member comprising a hard, generally flat, elongated metallic strip having first and second polished edges with a relieved area therebetween to prevent engagement of the metering member with a metered film of liquid on the resilient roll surface except by the portion of the metering member lying between the first and second polished edges; means to urge the metering member into pressure indented relation with the resilient surface; and heat exchanger means adjacent the metering member to code the metering member adjacent the metering edge.

Coating method

A blade surfacing machine for precisely honing a pair of intersecting surfaces on an extruder blade. The working surface of a rotating honing stone is maintained in spring-biased contact with a precisely leveled guide surface to achieve linear uniformity of the blade. A workholder table is pivotable about a horizontal axis and may be pin locked at selectable angles to produce blades having a selective angle of intersection between the two honed surfaces.

Variable angle extruder blade surfacing machine

A method and apparatus to ink and dampen a lithographic printing plate including a dampening fluid removal device comprising a doctor blade positioned in pressure indented relation with a resilient inking roller to remove dampening fluid of low viscosity from the roller while leaving more viscous ink on the roller surface. The blade, therefore, is efficient to doctor dampening fluid while insufficient for printing ink.

Dampening fluid removal device

A method and apparatus for continuously using ink and dampening fluid in a printing system includes removing ink and dampening fluid from a form roller after the form roller engages the printing plate. Mixing of the removed ink and dampening fluid to form a substantially homogeneous printing liquid is accomplished by circulating the removed ink and dampening fluid to a reservoir where it is mixed with ink in the reservoir by an auxillary blender. The homogeneous mixture is further circulated to the center of a metering nip between two rollers and flows longitudinally of the rollers at a rate to prevent separation of the dampening fluid from the ink. Unused printing ink and dampening fluid is returned to the reservoir with the ink and dampening fluid removed from the form roller.

Ink removal, circulating and distributing system

A planetary synchronizing system in which the length of an endless elastic conveyor is adjusted to maintain the length of the conveyor a multiple of the circumference of a drive wheel which can be driven at a variable speed, when the diameter of the drive wheel changes.

Planetary synchronizing device

An inker for a lithographic printing press in which ink and dampening fluid are applied to the printing plate by a resilient applicator roller. A resilient ink metering member having a flat metering surface is mounted on a support member which is movable to adjust the angle of intersection of the metering surface relative to a plane tangent to the roller surface. A doctor blade is mounted to remove dampening fluid from the roller surface and is actuated to an operative position upon actuation of the dampener to apply dampening fluid to the applicator roller.

Inking systems

A method and apparatus to ink and dampen a lithographic printing plate wherein one or more of four disclosed embodiments of a dampening fluid evaporator device directs a continuous stream of air or other drying fluid along the length of a single resilient inking form roller (22) to remove dampening fluid from the roller (22) while leaving substantially dry ink on the roller surface.

Coating apparatus

An object of the invention is to provide a method of metering to a printing plate (P). An applicator roller (312), which receives ink from a pick-up roller (310), is positioned in pressure indented relation with a metering roller (12). The surface speed of metering roller (12) is varied to meter the ink to roller apparatus which supplies the ink to printing plate (P).

Portable ink fountain

Ink metering apparatus comprising a resilient surfaced roller urged into indented relation with a printing plate; a source of ink positioned to apply an excess of ink to the portion of the resilient roller surface which has applied ink to the printing plate; and a resilient metering member having a hard, smooth, polished, highly developed, flexible edge resiliently urged by adjustment screws into pressure indented relation with the resilient roller surface. The flexible polished edge is resiliently and adjustably urged into pressure indented relation along the length of the resilient roller surface by forces of sufficient magnitude to deform the flexible polished edge along the length thereof such that the edge and the roller surface conform with each other and cooperate to form an orifice which is adjusted to the imperfections of the metering member and the resilient roller surface to form a continuous uniform film of ink on the resilient roller surface.

A method and apparatus for applying newsprint ink and dampening fluid to a lithographic printing plate, the apparatus comprising an ink metering roller in rolling pressure indented relation with a transfer roller having an oleophillic surface and a dampening fluid transfer roller having a hydrophillic surface each of the transfer rollers being driven by a reversible variable speed motor. The transfer rollers are in pressure indented relationship with a form roller which transfers a thin film of ink and dampening fluid to the printing plate. An excess of ink is supplied to the nip between the metering roller and the transfer roller to produce the thin film of ink which may be further conditioned by an ink storage roller prior to entry of the film of ink into the ink transfer nip between the transfer roller and the form roller. By controlling the relative speeds between the form roller and the transfer roller, slippage occurs which meters a thin film of ink onto the form roller for transfer and application to the printing plate.

Reversible newspaper press

A newspaper printing system wherein low viscosity newsprint ink and dampening fluid are applied to opposed lithographic printing plates which simultaneously engage opposite sides of a web of porous absorbent newsprint to print on both sides of the web. Each of the inkers comprises an ink metering roller in pressure indented relation with an ink transfer roller having an oleophillic surface, the ink transfer roller being in pressure indented relationship with a single form roller which is in pressure indented relation with one of the printing plates. Each of the dampeners comprises a dampening fluid metering roller in pressure indented relation with a dampening fluid transfer roller having a hydrophilic surface, the dampening fluid transfer roller being in pressure indented relation with the same single form roller such that ink and dampening fluid continuously applied on the single form roller is applied to each of the printing plates.
