This invention relates to oil soluble, nitrogen containing sulfonated polymers useful as additives for lubricating oil and fuel oil, which are effective as dispersants and viscosity modifiers. The polymeric dispersant additives are ionic polymers which comprise a backbone substantially soluble in the fuel or lubricant, and pendant ionic groups which are sulfonic acid groups which may be nuetralized with an ammonium cation or an amine. Polymeric dispersant additives of this type may be made which are particularly useful in crankcase lubricating oils for imparting viscosity improvement, varnish inhibition, oxidation inhibition and detergency to the lubricant. These additives may also impart rust preventive properties to the oil or fuel, and as V.I. improvers they can be formed to have particularly good low temperature viscosity effects in lubricating oil.

Oil-soluble nitrogen containing sulfonated polymers useful as oil

This invention relates to oil soluble, metal containing sulfonated polymers useful as additives for lubricating oils or hydrocarbon fuels and which are effective as dispersants. Such polymers of high molecular weight are also useful as viscosity-index improvers for the lubricating oils. The polymeric dispersant additives are ionic polymers which comprise a backbone substantially soluble in the fuel or lubricant, and pendant ionic groups which are sulfonic acid groups neutralized with a metal compound. Polymeric dispersant additives of this type may be made which are also capable of imparting excellent viscosity improvement, varnish inhibition, oxidation inhibition and detergency to the lubricant. These additives may also impart rust preventive properties to the oil or fuel, and as V.I. improvers they can be formed to have particularly good low temperature viscosity effects in lubricating oil.

Oil-soluble metal containing sulfonated polymers useful as oil additives

A polymeric substance, i.e. poly(isomerized C.sub.12 -C.sub.50 monoolefin), alone or as the alkylation derivative of an aromatic compound in combination with a lubricating oil pour depressant having pendant alkyl groups of 6 to 32 carbon atoms are useful in improving the cold flow properties of distillate hydrocarbon oils.

Oil soluble oxazoline reaction products of hydrocarbon substituted dicarboxylic acid, ester, or anhydride, for example polyisobutenylsuccinic anhydride, with 2,2-disubstituted-2-amino-1-alkanols, such as tris-hydroxymethylaminomethane (THAM), are useful additives in oleaginous compositions, such as sludge dispersants for lubricating oil or gasoline.

Derivatives of Oxazoline reaction products of hydrocarbon substituted dicarboxylic acid, ester, or anhydride, for example octadecenylsuccinic anhydride and polyisobutenylsuccinic anhydride with 2,2-disubstituted-2-amino-1-alkanols, such as tris-hydroxymethylaminomethane (THAM) are useful additives in oleaginous compositions, such as sludge dispersants for lubricating oil, or anti-rust agents for gasoline.

Oxazoline reaction products of hydrocarbon substituted dicarboxylic acid, ester, or anhydride, for example octadecenylsuccinic anhydride, with 2,2-disubstituted-2-amino-1-alkanols, such as tris-hydroxymethylaminomethane (THAM), and their derivatives are useful additives in oleaginous compositions, such as sludge dispersants for lubricating oil, or anti-rust agents for gasoline.

Oxazoline additives useful in oleaginous compositions

Middle distillate oils are improved with respect to flow and pour point by incorporating therein halogenated polymers comprised of ethylene and free radical polymerizable monomers containing polar groups. The halogenated ethylene-polar monomer copolymers are found to be more effective flow improvers and pour depressants than non-halogenated ethylene-polar monomer copolymers. Preferred polymeric additives include the ethylene-isobutyl acrylate copolymers and the ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers containing from about 5 to about 25 wt.% chlorine.

Derivatized ethylene/polar monomer polymers of improved performance

Sulfone copolymeric oil additives having utility as a lubricating oil pour point depressant, viscosity index improver, dispersant, load carrying agent, rust inhibitor and/or antioxidant, or as a cold flow improver for heavy distillates and residual fuels, comprise the hydrocarbon soluble copolymers of an ethylenically unsaturated polar monomer and sulfur dioxide. This sulfone copolymer may contain one or more additional monomers including: C.sub.2 to C.sub.50, preferably at least C.sub.6, substantially linear alpha olefins; C.sub.2 to C.sub.12, preferably C.sub.2 to C.sub.9, cyclic olefins; and, C.sub.4 to C.sub.6 conjugated diolefins.

Ethylene polymers in combination with an oil-soluble sulfone copolymer having a (Mn) of from about 800 to 500,000 improve the cold flow properties of distillate hydrocarbon oils.
