Processes for rendering a polyamine-epihalohydrin resin storage stable, including processes that prepare a storage stable resin and/or processes that treat resins. A composition containing a polyamine-epihalohydrin resin which includes CPD-forming species can be treated with at least one agent under conditions to at least one of inhibit, reduce and remove the CPD-forming species to obtain a reduced CPD-forming resin so that a composition containing the reduced CPD-forming polyamine-epihalohydrin resin when stored for 2 weeks at 50&#xb0; C., and a pH of about 2.5 to 3.5 contains less than about 250 ppm dry basis of CPD. The invention is also directed to a gelation storage stable reduced CPD-forming resin so that a composition containing the reduced CPD-forming polyamine-epihalohydrin resin, when stored at pH 1 for 24 hours at 50&#xb0; C. and measured at 24 hours, produces less than about 1000 ppm dry basis of CPD. A paper product containing the storage stable polyaminopolyamide-epihalohydrin resin, when corrected for adding at about a 1 wt % addition level of the polyaminopolyamide-epihalohydrin resin, contains less than about 250 ppb of CPD. Moreover, a resin can be prepared starting from a prepolymer having a low acid number or low concentration of acid end groups. The invention is also directed to papers containing the resins.

Reduced by product polyamine-epihalohydrin resins

Processes for rendering a polyamine-epihalohydrin resin storage stable, including processes that prepare a storage stable resin and/or processes that treat resins. Described are novel thermosetting maleimide compositions suitable for making cured resins, prepregs and tough thermoset composites. The thermosetting compositions comprise a multifunctional maleimide and a terminally unsaturated polyamide, polyimide, or polyamideimide oligomer which is soluble in the composition. The cured resins have a fracture toughness, K.sub.IC, of at least 1.0 MPam 1/2 and a glass transition temperature of at least 200.degree. C.

Bismaleimide compositions containing high glass transition temperature

Described are novel thermosetting maleimide compositions suitable for making cured resins, prepregs and tough thermoset composites. The thermosetting compositions comprise a multifunctional maleimide and a terminally unsaturated polyamide, polyimide, or polyamideimide oligomer which is soluble in the composition. The cured resins have a fracture toughness, K.sub.IC, of at least 1.0 MPan.sup.1/2 and a glass transition temperature of at least 200.degree. C.

A novel polyfunctional maleimide-based thermosettable resin composition comprising: (a) at least one polyfunctional maleimide compound selected from the group consisting of bismaleimide and polymaleimide, and (b) at least one ether derivative of an alkenylphenol.

Thermosettable resin compositions

Described are novel thermosetting maleimide compositions suitable for making cured resins, prepregs and tough thermoset composites. The thermosetting compositions comprise a multifunctional maleimide and terminally unsaturated polyamide, polyimide, or polyamideimide oligomer which is soluble in the composition. The cured resins have a fracture toughness, K.sub.ic, of at least 1.0 MPam.sup.1/2 and a glass transition temperature of at least 200.degree. C.

Described are novel thermosetting epoxy resin compositions suitable for making cured resins, prepregs and stiff, tough thermoset composites. The thermosetting compositions comprise a polyepoxide component, an amine hardner and a specified amount of certain aromatic oligomers containing functional groups which are reactive with the polyepoxide and/or hardener under curing conditions for the composition. The cured resins have a multiphase morphology which comprises at least one glassy continuous phase and at least one glassy discontinuous phase and have a fracture toughness, K.sub.IC, of at least 1.0 MPam.sup.1/2.

Thermosetting epoxy resin compositions and thermosets therefrom

Polyarylene polyethers, made by a process comprising reacting a dihydroxy compound and strong and weak bases in a liquid reaction medium at 100.degree.-200.degree. C. to form a double salt and then reacting the double salt with a slight molar excess of dihalobenzenoid compound bearing two replaceable halogens, are disclosed. The process reliably produces halogen-terminated polyarylene polyethers of select degrees of polymerization and desirable correspondence between weight and number average molecular weights. In subsequent steps amine-terminated polyarylene polyethers are made using the strong and weak bases. The resulting amine-terminated polyethers have a low, select degree of polymerization, desirable correspondence between weight and number average molecular weights and high level of amine termination.

Polyarylene polyether made using mixed base system

To an aqueous dispersion of spurted polyolefin pulp is added from about 1% to about 20%, preferably from about 2% to about 12%, by solid weight based on the weight of spurted polyolefin pulp, of an anionic latex containing a natural rubber or synthetic which is swellable in hydrocarbons. The latex is then precipitated onto the spurted polyolefin pulp with a suitable agent, preferably water-soluble calcium, magnesium, barium or aluminum salts or calcium or barium hydroxides. When the product is recovered, the resulting natural rubber or synthetic treated spurted polyolefin pulp is readily dispersible in hydrocarbons. Because of this, the pulp can be added to cutback asphalt to form viscous compositions which can be readily sprayed, brushed and troweled with minimal pulp separation problems.

Disclosed is a stiff, tough thermoset composite, the composite comprising a crosslinked epoxy resin matrix and high strength filaments. The resin matrix comprises a glassy discontinuous phase dispersed in a glassy continuous phase that continues throughout the resin matrix. Volume fractions of the discontinuous phase are at least about 35% of the total volume of the continuous and discontinuous phases combined in exceptionally tough composites. Also disclosed are novel resin compositions suitable for making these thermosets.

Epoxy thermosets having improved toughness

Described are novel thermosetting epoxy resin compositions suitable for making cured resins, prepregs and stiff, tough thermoset composites. The thermosetting compositions comprise a polyepoxide component, an amine hardener and a specified amount of certain aromatic oligomers containing functional groups which are reactive with the polyepoxide and/or hardener under curing conditions for the composition. The cured resins have a multiphase morphology which comprises at least one glassy continuous phase and at least one glassy discontinuous phase and have a fracture toughness, K.sub.IC, of at least 1.0 MPam.sup.1/2.

Stable aqueous dispersions of polyolefin fibers are formed by contacting the fibers with an aqueous solution of a cationic copolymer of an acrylamide and an acrylate or methacrylate ester, the pH of the aqueous solution having been adjusted to be in the range of from about 9.5 to about 12 either prior to, during or after contacting the fibers with said solution. An exemplary copolymer is that formed by the copolymerization of acrylamide and .beta.-methacryloyloxyethyltrimethylammonium methyl sulfate.

Preparation of stable aqueous dispersions of polyolefin fibers

The invention relates to arylacetylene polymers and thermoset resins prepared therefrom. The preferred thermoset resins are prepared by copolymerizing a polyacetylenically unsaturated prepolymer with about 2 to 70% of a monomeric acetylenically unsaturated aromatic compound that has a melting point below about 185.degree. C. and a boiling point above about 250.degree. C. The polyacetylenically unsaturated prepolymer is a polymer of at least one polyacetylenically substituted aromatic compound such as a diethynylbenzene, which prepolymer has a number average molecular weight of about 900 to 12,000 and contains about 5 to 20% by weight of acetylenic groups. Typical monomeric acetylenic aromatic compounds that are copolymerized with the prepolymer are diphenylacetylene and diphenylbutadiyne.

Poly(arylacetylenes) and thermoset resins therefrom

The invention relates to poly(arylacetylene) molding compositions and thermoset resins prepared therefrom. The molding compositions comprise blends of a polyacetylenically unsaturated prepolymer and from about 2 to about 70%, by weight of the prepolymer, of a monomeric acetylenically unsaturated aromatic compound having a melting point below about 185.degree. C. and a boiling point above about 250.degree. C. The polyacetylenically unsaturated prepolymer is a polymer of at least one polyacetylenically substituted aromatic compound, such as a diethynylbenzene, which prepolymer has a number average molecular weight of about 900 to 12,000 and contains about 5 to 20% by weight of acetylenic groups. Typical monomeric acetylenic aromatic compounds which are blended with the prepolymer are diphenylacetylene and diphenylbutadiyne.
