Through dual push-pull cables, two-dimensional positioning motions and accompanying forces of an actuator device, such as a motor truck gear shift lever, are transmitted to a remote actuated device, such as the gear selector and shifter mechanism in the truck transmission. Interconnected by the cables, matched motion translators in master and slave units are rotationally and translationally guided in their respective units so as to transform two-dimensionally defined actuator motion applied to the master unit into motion components for transmission by the dual connecting cables to the slave unit, where the lineal cable motions are transformed back into a duplication of the actuator motion with accompanying forces effective to selectively operate the actuated device connected to the slave unit translator member.

A combination venting and antipollution device for a shipboard liquid storage tank. A closure wall divides the vent conduit into a lower tank chamber in direct communication with the tank and an upper vent space in direct communication with the vent opening. A spring-urged valve closure member opens or closes an opening through the closure wall. Low pressure in the tank moves the valve closure member down into a lower open position, to admit air or other fluid to the tank; high pressure in the tank moves the valve closure member up into an upper open position to vent air from the tank. A hydrostatic pressure chamber open to the atmosphere houses a sealed bellows, and a spill-lock valve secured to the bellows normally opens to the vent a spill-lock chamber on the vent side of the valve closure member. However, when the pressure in the pressure chamber (or manual action) compresses the bellows (as when the ship sinks), the bellows moves the spill-lock valve to close the connection to the vent and cause the fluid from the tank chamber to flow into the spill-lock chamber, to bear upon a spill-lock piston there. In this condition, the tank pressure acts on the spill-lock piston to prevent the valve closure member from moving up into its upper position until the pressure in the tank chamber is well above that then present in the vent space, but the tank pressure does not restrain the valve closure member from moving down into its lower open position. Salvage operation is also provided for.

Combination pressure-vacuum relief and antipollution valve

A valve unit for installation in a vent to atmosphere from an upper end of a shipboard storage tank for liquids. The valve has a housing with a closure seat, a normally open closure member, and an actuator for automatically closing the closure member against the seat to prevent the passage of liquids out from the tank if and when the ship sinks. The actuator includes a sealed reference chamber and a restricted orifice leading into a housing surrounding the sealed chamber, so that if the ship sinks, water enters the orifice, fills the housing around the sealed chamber and exerts pressure substantially greater than that inside the sealed reference chamber. A trigger is actuated by movement resulting from the pressure in the housing exceeding that inside the reference chamber. The invention also provides for a safety by-pass. A by-pass conduit leads around the closure seat, and a relief valve in the by-pass conduit opens only when the pressure in the main valve, i.e., below the closure seat is a predetermined amount higher than the pressure in the vent conduit above the closure seat. The by-pass conduit is in a housing that is freely detachable from the valve housing and which is secured to it by a pivotally mounted locking clamp device. Detachment results in mechanical locking of the closure member against its seat and also enables salvage of the contents with either positive or negative pressure after the ship has sunk.
