Multiple functional systems are integrated to configure a portable handheld decision-aid device for first responder medics. Fuzzy membership functions of 'life' and 'death' are used to determine the status of fallen people using remote measurements. EO/IR cameras can be used to detect and identify casualties in a mass injury situation, while also estimating body temperature. Using the temperature, along with the remote estimation of a second vital sign, the life membership proportion can be estimated from the ground truth by using a 2D projection of stable vital signs. The other fuzzy membership function, death, can be estimated by the presence or absence of peri-mortem and post-mortem molecules. These molecules are only released after death and provide a certain indication of death. Solid state UV laser resonance Raman backscattering from these molecules allows the device to analyze the molecules present in a plume around the casualty.

A method of forecasting naturally-occurring phenomena, such as seismic activity, includes taking localized measurements of the Earth's gravitational force change using MEM inertial motion units. Trends in the measurements are interpreted and related to a phenomenon of interest, a likelihood of occurrence is predicted based on the relationship, and the likelihood is reported to interested parties, preferably automatically to emergency bulletin sources. Measurements can be taken from above the Earth's atmosphere. The trends can be interpreted by determining blind source separation information directed to the region underneath the Earth's mantle crust to determine composition and/or movement.

A method and apparatus for determining three dimensional sub-voxel positions using synthetic aperture radar. The apparatus includes at least four non-coplanar, phase-coherent synthetic aperture radar (SAR) platforms comprising a plurality of phase-synchronized local oscillators cohered to a common reference clock, a first SAR platform of the SAR platforms operable to transmit a radar waveform, and the SAR platforms operable to receive scattered energy waveforms resulting from the radar waveform and operable to generate two-dimensional (2-D) SAR images based on the received scattered energy waveforms. The apparatus also includes a synchronizing processor operable to communicate with the SAR platforms and operable to synchronize a plurality of SAR transmission and receiving intervals for the SAR platforms. Optionally, the apparatus also includes an image-coregistration processor operable to receive at least four 2-D SAR images from the SAR platforms, and operable to generate a 3-D SAR image having 3-D voxel positions by coregistering the 2-D SAR images. Optionally, the apparatus also includes a sub-voxel position processor operable to calculate sub-voxel positions of single point scatterers from differential phase measurements on a given voxel across all of the SAR platforms.

A process of performing a medical test includes taking multi-spectral images of an area of interest of a patient. The patient can be a human being or an animal, and can be known to be healthy or known to have health issues or problems. A multi-spectral camera includes a long-infrared charge-coupled device, a mid-infrared detector array, and a control device that synchronizes operation of the charge-coupled device and the detector array. The mid-infrared detector array can include carbon nanotubes. The carbon nanotubes can be detector elements. For example, the carbon nanotubes can be tuned-bandgap carbon nanotubes. Each pixel of resolution of the detector array can include a balanced Wheatstone bridge circuit including one of the tuned-bandgap carbon nanotubes. Adjacent pixels of the detector array can be arranged for orthogonal polarization.

A first and second known feature space associated with respective first and second classes are each converted to a plurality of voltages reflecting corresponding first and second feature space bins. A first and second one-dimensional, non-linear resistive grid has input nodes that continuously receive the voltages reflecting the respective first and second known feature space. Each resistive grid produces an output voltage at each of a corresponding plurality of first and second output nodes. Each of a plurality of voltage comparators are used to compare voltages at corresponding first and second output nodes to output a discrete probability density function that considers corresponding ones of the first and second feature space bins. A display may be used to visually or otherwise provide each probability density function from each voltage comparator.

Superconducting material in a matrix has the superconducting current decreased in one filament of the matrix by interaction of the Cooper pairs with radiation controlled by a spatial light modulator. This decrease in current results in a switch of current, in a relative sense, to another filament in the matrix. This 'switching' mechanism can be used in a digital or analog fashion in a superconducting computer application.

A synergistic quasi-free electron laser for generating infrared radiation. The laser includes a means for producing a volume of ionized gas plasma, a means for directing an electron beam through the gas plasma in a first direction, and a means for directing a laser pump beam into the gas plasma in a second direction opposite to the first direction to produce synergistic bunching of the electron beam and the ionized gas plasma. A portion of the laser pump beam is backscattered by the bunched electron beam and gas plasma to form an output beam having a frequency up-shifted from that of the laser pump beam. The frequency of the output beam may be tuned by changing the velocity of the electron beam.
