Antistatic, fabric softening and soil release promoting compositions are disclosed which comprise nonionic detergent, soil release promoting agent of the PET-POET type, and a certain type of silicone polymer (designated Type X or Silicone X). Such compositions very preferably also include cationic fabric softener (CFS), polyacrylate, silicone glycol copolymer (SGC), and builder for the nonionic detergent, with adjuvants being optional. Also within the invention are compositions that comprise only some of the mentioned components, and such compositions may be employed as wash cycle additives to improve the properties of detergent compositions and of softergent compositions. Processes for manufacturing and using the invented compositions are also disclosed.

An antistatic particulate laundry detergent composition comprises synthetic organic detergent, preferably sodium linear dodecylbenzene or sodium linear tridecylbenzene sulfonate, inorganic and/or organic builder for the detergent, preferably sodium tripolyphosphate and/or zeolite builder, and higher alkyl or alkylbenzene hydroxyethyl imidazoline of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is an alkyl or alkylbenzene of 8 to 24 carbon atoms preferably stearyl, which detergent composition is of improved detergency due to the presence therein of the higher alkyl or alkylbenzene hydroxyethyl imidazoline antistat. In preferred detergent compositions of this type bentonite is desirably present for its fabric softening activity, and such activity is improved by the presence of the higher alkyl or alkylbenzene hydroxyethyl imidazoline, which also possesses fabric softening properties. When low phosphorus contents of detergent compositions are not required by law or regulation, contents of zeolites and other non-phosphate builders may be omitted and increased proportions of tripolyphosphate may be employed, instead. The mentioned detergent compositions are useful to wash soiled laundry and to make it softer and static-free, whether such washing is with American or European washing machines and in accordance with such practices. Unexpected improvements in soil removal, as measured visually and by reflectometer, are noted after the washing of laundry that had been stained with oily soils, and the washed laundry is softer. Also described in a process for manufacturing detergent compositions comprising synthetic anionic organic detergent, zeolite, tripolyphosphate and the mentioned imidazoline, in which an aqueous crutcher mix is made, to which the zeolite is added before the tripolyphosphate, and the imidazoline is added immediately after the tripolyphosphate, thereby avoiding undesirable reaction of the imidazoline with the zeolite, which reaction has a negative effect on antistatic and fabric softening properties of the resulting product. The product is obtained in particulate solid form by spray drying of the crutcher mix in conventional manner. Various other active and adjuvant components of the detergent composition may be post-added with the spray dried beads or may be incorporated in the crutcher mix.

A free flowing phosphate-free particulate heavy duty laundry detergent is comprised of particles of a mixture of sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate having nonionic detergent in the interior and on the surface thereof, to which is adhered a coating of smaller particles of ion exchanging zeolite. The product made is exceptionally free flowing and, although the particles are relatively large, is also of high bulk density (over 0.6 g./cc.). Also within the invention is a method of making such products by contacting the particles of mixed sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate with a normally liquid or pasty nonionic detergent in the liquid state so that the detergent is largely absorbed by the particles and coats the surfaces thereof, which are then coated with powdered zeolite which adheres to the surface nonionic of the particles and makes them free flowing.

A fabric softening built detergent composition, often preferably in the form of a stable and pourable liquid, includes a detersive proportion of a synthetic organic detergent, such as anionic and/or nonionic detergent(s), a building proportion of polyacetal carboxylate builder for the detergent(s) and a fabric softening proportion of bentonite. The presence of the polyacetal carboxylate builder in the described compositions increases the fabric softening action of the bentonite during washing of laundry. In preferred liquid detergent compositions the bentonite helps to stabilize such liquids and inhibits separation of the polyacetal carboxylate builder particles, which are dispersed in the aqueous liquid medium. Also within the invention are methods of simultaneously washing and softening fabric materials by washing them in wash waters containing the components of the described compositions, and then rinsing and drying. In further aspects of the invention an antistatic agent, such as dimethyl distearyl ammonium chloride, is present in a fabric softening composition and in the wash water to inhibit the development of electrostatic charges on the washed material and the resulting objectionable clinging of such materials together after drying.

A fabric softening and fluffing particulate detergent composition comprises a detersive proportion of an anionic synthetic organic detergent, such as sodium linear higher alkylbenzene sulfonate, a building proportion of a builder for the detergent, such as sodium tripolyphosphate, sodium carbonate and/or sodium silicate, a fabric softening proportion of bentonite, and a softening and fluffing proportion of a magnesium salt, which is at least slightly water soluble, such as magnesium sulfate. The basic detergent composition, containing the detergent and builder, sometimes with inert filler and preferably with desirable adjuvants, is preferably in the form of spray dried beads, and the bentonite and magnesium salt are preferably agglomerated together to particles of about the same size as the spray dried beads, and are mixed with the spray dried beads. The invention also relates to the mentioned agglomerate and to processes for making the detergent composition and the agglomerate.

A free flowing phosphate-free high bulk density particulate heavy duty laundry detergent is comprised of particles of spray dried base beads containing ion exchanging zeolite, sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate into which is absorbed a nonionic detergent. The product is made by spray drying an aqueous mixture of the zeolite, carbonate and bicarbonate, optionally with soluble silicate present too, decomposing some of the bicarbonate to carbonate during the drying operation and mixing nonionic detergent in liquid form with the spray dried base beads produced and absorbing such detergent into such beads.

The product is made by spray drying an aqueous mixture or slurry of the zeolite and carbonate, mixing with the beads produced a water soluble silicate powder such as hydrous sodium silicate of Na.sub.2 O:SiO.sub.2 ratio of about 1:2 and mixing nonionic detergent in liquid form with the mixture of spray dried base beads and silicate powder and absorbing the nonionic detergent into said mixture.
