Disclosed is a video display system comprising a spatial light modulator, such as a DMD modulator. The system uses a light source and color-wheel filter that is interposed between the light source and the spatial light modulator, the color-wheel filter being divided into primary color segments and at least one neutral density ('ND') segment that is complementary to at least one of the primary color segments and having a transmissivity that is lower than that of its corresponding primary color segment. At the border between the ND segment and its complementary primary color segment is an area that can be referred to as an ND spoke. The video display system modulates light from this ND spoke area along with light from the other segments.

A method for compensating for a shift in color in a light source and a system of color illumination for a projection visual display (PVD) system. In one embodiment, the method includes: (1) field sequentially operating an array of emitters to generate a sequence of light beams, each light beam comprising an uncompensated saturated color, (2) determining a compensated target color from the uncompensated standard color, the compensated target color determined based upon a variation in the uncompensated standard color and variations in at least two other uncompensated standard colors, (3) combining a first light beam of a first color with a second light beam of a second color to produce said compensated target color, the first and second light beams combined in an optical path to travel concurrently, the combination of the first and second light beams resulting in a composite color coordinate and without exceeding the etendue limit and (4) directing the combination of the first and second light beams at the spatial light modulator, said modulator operable to receive the combination and produce a desired color on a display.

A color control algorithm compensates variations in the display system so as to maintain color consistency in the projected images on the screen by constructing a color mapping table of the display system to include effects due to the variations and during image display applications, generating inputs of the color mapping table to include the effects due to the variations in the display system.

System and method for enhancing image quality in a display system. A preferred embodiment comprises a variable light source capable of producing a light of specified intensity and color, an array of light modulators optically coupled to the variable light source, the array to modulate the light based upon image data to display images on a display plane, a controller coupled to the array, the controller to issue commands to control the array, and a light driver circuit coupled to the variable light source and the controller, the light driver circuit to provide a signal to the variable light source to specify the intensity of the light produced by the variable light source, when there is a change in a color of light being displayed or when a change in a weight of the image data to be displayed requires less light to be displayed than a current output level.

System and method for displaying images

Disclosed are reset techniques for a spatial light modulator, and related system for displaying an image. The systems and methods have pixels that are loaded with data and reset commands to take on binary states, where the methods employ adaptable algorithms to provide flexibility in placement of the reset commands. Specifically, valid regions for such reset commands are determined, and times for consecutive bit segments are calculated; and DMD load times are adjusted for a proper sequence. An advantage of the disclosed methods is that two consecutive bit segments are no longer restricted to following a pattern of normal/short bit segments. In contrast, with the disclosed technique short segments may be consecutive, allowing the implementation of additional enhancements, including neutral density filtering (NDF) techniques that typically include adjacent short bits in the bit sequence.

Bit segment timing organization providing flexible bit segment lengths

Disclosed herein are methods for providing a load/reset sequence for a visual display system () having a phased reset spatial light modulator (SLM) (). The SLM () has pixels () that are addressable with data by means of loads (ld) and resets (r), where the data is formatted in bit-planes (-)and each bit-plane is loaded as one or more segments (S-S) in a predetermined sequence during a frame-time. In one embodiment, the method comprises storing a display order of the segments (S-S) and determining whether resetting any of the segments (S-S) conflicts with the resetting of another of the segments (S-S), thereby identifying a conflicting segment. The method further includes skewing the display time of the conflicting segment to avoid the reset conflict, and identifying in the sequence a segment before and a segment after the conflicting segment each affected by the skewing of the conflicting segment, where the segments before and after the conflicting segment are each of respective bit-planes comprising multiple segments in the sequence. In this embodiment, the method further comprises counter-skewing the display times of segments respectively corresponding to the segments before and after the conflicting segment. Then, the method includes setting start times for each load (ld) and reset (r) of each of the segments (S-S).

Generalized reset conflict resolution of load/reset sequences for spatial light modulators

Providing color management includes receiving measurements of the intensity of colors. A light source generates light beams to yield the colors, where the light beams are generated in accordance to image data to create an image. A target color value is established. A duty cycle sequence operable to control the light source is selected in accordance with the measurements and the target color value. Current levels for currents provided to the light source are selected in accordance with the duty cycle sequence and the target color value.

Managing the color temperature for a light source array

Disclosed herein are visual display systems and methods capable of having shifted bit-weights in neutral density filtering (NDF) applications. In one embodiment, a method () of displaying an image comprises transmitting light through an optical filter () comprising at least one high transmissivity portion configured to output light at an initial intensity, and at least one low transmissivity portion configured to output light at a lower intensity than the initial intensity, where the initial intensity and lower intensity output light illuminates a spatial light modulator (). The method also includes providing a plurality of data bits (non-ND) from a predetermined number of data bits (B&#x2013;B), where each of the plurality comprises a pulse-width longer than a load-time for operating the spatial light modulator (). In this embodiment, the method further includes providing at least one data bit (ND) from the predetermined number of data bits, where the at least one data bit comprises an initial pulse-width less than the load-time and comprises an adjusted pulse-width greater than the load-time. Then, the method further comprises operating selected portions of the spatial light modulator () in coordination with the initial intensity and lower intensity output light using the pulse-widths of one or more of the plurality of data bits (non-ND) and the adjusted pulse-width of the at least one data bit (ND).

Digital system and method for displaying images using shifted bit-weights for neutral density filtering applications

A motor control system provides a low-cost method of phase-locking a motor to an input timing signal. Timer circuits 502, 506 measure the period of a timing signal and the relative phase between the timing signal and a motor rotor. A frequency command generator circuit 520 outputs a motor speed command based on the period of the timing signal and the relative phase of the timing signal compared to the motor rotor. The motor speed command controls the output of a motor driver circuit which drives the motor rotor speed synchronously with the input timing signal. The rotor speed is gradually altered to adjust the relative phase between the input timing signal and the motor rotor. This results in a small frequency-lock error being used to maintain a predetermined phase relationship between the timing signal and the motor rotor.
