A system includes a processor circuit that receives intraluminal images obtained by an intraluminal imaging device during movement through a patient's body lumen. The processor circuit outputs, to a display, a visual representation of user guidance in response to the processor circuit identifying, among the intraluminal images, a candidate intraluminal image. The user guidance includes stopping the movement and instructing the patient to initiate deep breathing. The processor circuit receives additional intraluminal images obtained by the intraluminal imaging device while the movement is stopped and the patient is deep breathing. The processor circuit determines if a shape and/or size of the body lumen changes in the additional intraluminal images. The processor circuit accepts or rejects the candidate intraluminal image based on if the shape and/or size of the body lumen changes. The processor circuit outputs, to the display, a visual representation corresponding to accepting or rejecting the candidate intraluminal image.

Systems and methods for suppressing off-axis sidelobes and/or clutter, near-field reverberation clutter, and/or grating lobe contributions are disclosed. A dual apodization with median (DAM) filtering technique is disclosed. The dual apodization technique may include summing aligned channel data with apodization functions () with complementary apertures applied. Median values for a zero function (RF) and the resulting signals (RF, RF) from the complementary apertures are determined to generate a median value signal (, MVS). The median value signal is used to generate an ultrasound image with enhanced image contrast. A method of image smoothing of the ultrasound image with enhanced image contrast is also disclosed. Two or more images are taken wherein during the image taking a focal sweep is performed. The exposure intensity is modulated during the focal sweep and done so differently for the images. This modulation provides for a watermarking of depth information in the images. The difference in exposure during the sweep watermarks the depth information differently in the images. By comparing the images a depth map for the images can be calculated. A camera system has a lens and a sensor and a means for performing a focal sweep and means for modulating the exposure intensity during the focal sweep. Modulating the exposure intensity can be done by modulating a light source or the focal sweep or modulating the transparency of a transparent medium in the light path.
