The present invention provides a method for supporting handoffs of a first mobile unit in a wireless communication system that supports multiple vocoder technologies. The method includes allocating, prior to completion of a handoff of the first mobile unit, a transcoder function to the first mobile unit. The method also includes detecting a change in a format of at least one packet received from the first mobile unit. The change indicates that the vocoder technology used by the first mobile unit to form packets has changed. The method also includes transcoding packets in response to detecting the change in the format.

Method of providing transcoding during voice-over-internet protocol handoff

A method of supporting access to a selected Internet Protocol (IP) multimedia application via an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is provided for a roaming mobile node (MN)&#x2014;i.e., user equipment (UE)served by a wireless telecommunications system. The method includes: includes establishing a first IP tunnel between the UE and a local access gateway of a visited network, the first tunnel being anchored at the local access gateway; establishing a second IP tunnel between the UE and a home gateway of a home network, the second tunnel being anchored at the home gateway; receiving data packets at the local access gateway for the UE; filtering the packets received at the local access gateway to suitably classify corresponding traffic into one of a plurality of data flows supported within the first tunnel at varying Quality of Service (QoS) levels; and filtering the received packets.

Packet filtering/classification and/or policy control support from both visited and home networks

A broadband address of a first subscriber is identified and communicated to a second subscriber in a first communication system using an SMS data enabled cellular system or call origination set up messaging. If authorization is given by the second subscriber, the broadband address of the second subscriber is delivered to the first subscriber by the first communication system, whereby the first and second subscribers have exchanged their respective broadband addresses over a first communications system where the broadband addresses are utilized for broadband communications over a second communication system.

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for re-sequencing data packets received from multiple devices in a packet-based digital communication system. A set of data packets is received by a data packet sequencer. Each data packet includes an indicator of the originator of the data packet. The data packet sequencer stores the set of data packets, preferably in an input buffer. The data packet sequencer reorders the data packets by retrieving a first data packet and determining the originator of the first data packet. The data packet sequencer then transmits all data packets that were originated by a first originator of the first data packet prior to transmitting data packets that were not originated by the first originator.

Method and apparatus for re-sequencing data packets

An improved wireless network provides intersystem handoffs between existing circuit wireless systems and packet systems. A packet wireless system is enhanced to provide translation between circuit and packet call models. A Media Gateway translates bearer traffic between formats used in each system. The Media Gateway, a Media Gateway Control Function, and an associated Call State Control Function, cooperate to emulate the behavior of a circuit wireless system, so that when interoperating with conventional circuit systems, the packet system appears to be another circuit wireless system. Where necessary, the Media Gateway, Media Gateway Control Function, and Call State Control Function further cooperate to emulate the functions of an anchor MSC of a circuit wireless system.

Handover of wireless calls between systems supporting circuit and packet call models

A system and method for establishing licensor changeable limits on shared software usage without the licensor having access to the system on which the shared software is running. An encrypted numerical limit value is embedded in the licensed software (program); when the program is executed ('accessed'), as a first step, the program decrypts the limit value and compares it to the number of users currently accessing the shared program. If the number of users is less than the limit, then access is allowed. If the number of users is equal to (or greater than) the limit, then access is denied.
