Platy pigments with good tactile characteristics are obtained by treating such pigments with a compound of the general formula: ##STR1## where m is an even number from 8 to 18 and n is 3 or 4 under defined conditions. N.epsilon.-lauroyl lysine is preferred. The pigments are especially useful in cosmetic compositions such as eye shadow.

Platy pigments

Soap bars are prepared by mixing a soap base with a metal oxide coated mica pearlescent pigment, that is strongly colored, or alternately with the colorant added separately to the soap base, so that the soap bars are brightly colored.

Colored extruded soap bars

A soap bar having the appearance of a polished wood grain is prepared by mixing the soap formulation with an iron oxide coated micaceous pearlescent pigment and extruding the combination such that the iron oxide coated micaceous pearlescent pigment is oriented generally unidirectionally.

Nacreous pigment products comprising mica particles coated with translucent layers consisting essentially of titanium dioxide in the rutile form. A process for the preparation of such pigment products is disclosed, involving treatment with tin compounds, so that the TiO.sub.2 coating will crystallize mainly in the rutile form rather than as anatase during calcination of the pigment. The rutile-coated mica exhibits markedly enhanced light stability as compared with anatase-coated mica pigment products.
