This invention provides a method for enhancing wettability of an organic surface which is at least comparatively hydrophobic which comprises subjecting said surface to plasma surface treatment using a gaseous medium selected from the group consisting of oxygen, argon, nitrous oxide, air and mixtures thereof.

Fine particle size CaCO.sub.3 is encapsulated with low density polyethylene (LDPE) in a fluid energy mill. Very thin extrusion oriented films (as low as 0.4 mil.) were made using the LDPE encapsulated CaCO.sub.3 at high concentrations of 32-61%. Such films are soft and have a dry 'feel' and translucent appearance with slip and anti-block properties. They can be heat sealed, printed, and folded. The films can be used as paper and paper tissue substitutes.

There is provided a blend of poly(p-methylstyrene) with small amounts of poly (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4) olefin, olefin copolymer or SBR. This invention provides a method for improving properties of thermoplastic films that comprises irradiating films of poly(p-methylstyrene) of p-methylstyrene copolymers with acrylonitrile, or of high impact poly (p-methylstyrene) with ionizing radiation at a dosage between about 30 megarads and about 70 megarads (preferably between about 40 megarads and about 60 megarads), whereby said films are heat resistant and have increased tensile properties at elevated temperatures.

There are provided shaped articles, such as trays and food containers, thermoformed from oriented poly (p-methylstyrene) sheet, oriented foamed poly (p-methylstyrene) film with oriented poly (p-methylstyrene) foam or polystyrene foam, that have been cross-linked by exposure to radiation. Such articles are resistant to fats and fatty foods contained therein can be placed in microwave ovens without destruction by hot, melted fats. The articles can also withstand conventional oven temperatures.

The present invention is directed to improved coated film products comprising essentially a film substrate having a dry continuous adherent coating thereon formed from certain colloidally stable polymer latexes. In particular, such polymers comprise vinylidine chloride multipolymers with a relatively low pH which are coated upon the surface of an oriented polyacrylonitrile film which has been corona discharge treated prior to coating. Such coated film products exhibit improved resistance to seal strength deterioration or complete failure when the coated film products, after having been sealed, are immersed in water at room temperature or above including boiling water.
