A process for sulfiding a cobalt-molybdenum bulk catalyst precursor to form a bulk sulfided alcohol synthesis catalyst. The process steps include contacting an oxidic bulk cobalt-molybdenum catalyst precursor with an amount of a sulfur-containing compound which is in the range of about 1 to about 10 moles of sulfur per mole of metals, at one or more temperatures at or in excess of about 300&#xb0; C. in a medium which is substantially devoid of added hydrogen, so as to form a sulfided bulk cobalt-molybdenum catalyst product. Also described are processes for forming the catalyst precursor, processes for producing an alcohol using the catalyst product and the catalyst product itself.

Process for recovering group VIB metals from a catalyst

The invention pertains to a process for the hydroprocessing of a hydrocarbon feedstock wherein said feedstock is contacted at hydroprocessing conditions with a catalyst composition which comprises bulk catalyst particles which comprise at least one Group VIII non-noble metal and at least two Group VIB metals. The Group VIII and Group VIB metals comprise from about 50 wt. % to about 100 wt. %, calculated as oxides, of the total weight of the bulk catalyst particles. The metals are present in the catalyst composition in their oxidic and/or sulfidic state. The catalyst composition has an X-ray diffraction pattern in which the characteristic full width at half maximum does not exceed 2.5&deg; when the Group VIB metals are molybdenum, tungsten, and, optionally, chromium, or does not exceed 4.0&deg; when the Group VIB metals are molybdenum and chromium or tungsten and chromium.

Process for preparing a mixed metal catalyst composition

The invention pertains to a process for preparing a catalyst composition comprising bulk catalyst particles comprising at least one Group VIII non-noble metal and at least two Group VIB metals. The process comprises combining and reacting at least one Group VIII non-noble metal component with at least two Group VIB metal components in the presence of a protic liquid, with at least one of the metal components remaining at least partly in the solid state during the entire process. The Group VIII and Group VIB metals comprise from about 50 wt. % to about 100 wt. %, calculated as oxides, of the total weight of said bulk catalyst particles, with the solubility of those of the metal components which are at least partly in the solid state during the reaction being less than 0.05 mol/100 ml water at 18&deg; C. The invention also covers a catalyst composition made by that process and a process for the hydroprocessing of a hydrocarbon feedstock by contacting the feedstock with that catalyst at hydroprocessing conditions.
