An anti-microbial filter () for a micro-fluidic system () includes a silicon-based filter membrane () having holes () formed therein. The membrane () is formed on a substrate (). One side of the filter membrane () has an anti-microbial coating () between the holes () on the filter membrane () and the other side can include filter supports formed from a silicon substrate. A method for making the anti-microbial filter () includes forming a filter membrane () on a substrate (), forming holes () in the membrane () by providing a filter mask () and etching holes () through holes () in the mask (). Then portions of the substrate () are removed from the filter membrane () using a masking and etching process to expose the holes (). An anti-microbial coating is applied to the membrane () adjacent the holes ().

Micro-fluidic anti-microbial filter

The invention is directed to a device for obtaining flow rate measurements including a sensor assembly and a housing. The sensor assembly includes a body defining a first fluid flow passage having an inlet, an outlet, a flow restricting element in the first fluid flow passage between the inlet and the outlet, an upstream fluid pressure sensor, a downstream fluid pressure sensor, an upstream signal contact connected to the upstream fluid pressure sensor, and a downstream signal contact connected to the downstream fluid pressure sensor. The housing has an upstream portion defining an upstream port, a downstream portion defining a downstream port, and a probe access port configured to provide access of a probe to at least one of the upstream signal contact and downstream signal contact. The housing can also define a second fluid flow passage in parallel with the first fluid flow passage. The device can be disposable.

Fluid flow measurement device

A monolithic flow controller for controlling the rate at which a medicinal liquid is administered to a patient. The monolithic flow controller includes one or more virtual valves that, because of their relatively small opening size (less than 0.5 &mgr;m in diameter), only permit fluid to flow through the valve when a forward bias voltage is applied. If a reverse bias voltage or no voltage is applied, fluid flow through the opening is inhibited. The fluid rate through the device is monitored using two pressure sensors or a differential pressure sensor that determine the differential pressure along the flow path through the device or relative to the external ambient pressure. The flow through the device is equal to the product of the differential pressure and the conductance of the channel in the flow controller. A capacitive bubble sensor is optionally provided to detect bubbles in the medicinal liquid being administered to the patient. The flow controller can be made sufficiently small to be injected into a patient's cardiovascular system or other portion of the patient's body through a hypodermic syringe and needle, or it can be implanted in the patient's body at a desired site. The medicinal liquid can be contained within an integral pressurized fluid reservoir, administered by gravity feed, or conveyed by a pump to an inlet port of the flow controller.

Monolithic high performance miniature flow control unit

Apparatus and a method for monitoring a percentage of the oxygen saturation in the hemoglobin of blood flowing through a blood vessel. An optical sensor that detects the percentage oxygen saturation in blood is disposed proximate a proximal end of the catheter. A thermistor is disposed adjacent to the distal end of the catheter and it is employed to detect changes in blood temperature that indicate the position of the catheter's distal end in the blood vessel. Indicia or marks visible at intervals on the outer surface of the catheter enable a medical practitioner to determine the length of the catheter that has been introduced into the blood vessel. A strain relief that is flexible and resists stretching extends along the length of the catheter. For flushing the distal end of the catheter, a fluid supply may be connected to a lumen running through the catheter to provide the flushing fluid. A removable guide wire is inserted in the lumen when positioning the distal end of the catheter at a location in the blood vessel and provides enhanced rigidity for this purpose. The catheter may be coated with an anticoagulant such as heparin, to prevent blood from coagulating on the exterior surface of the catheter.

Intravascular oximetry catheter

A pressure monitoring apparatus for use in monitoring a physiological fluid pressure in successive patients. Three embodiments of the pressure monitoring apparatus (10, 100, 200) are disclosed, each of which include a disposable portion ( 12, 12', 12') and a reusable portion ( 14, 14', 14'). Fluid flows through the disposable portion and into a cavity (48) that is covered with an elastomeric membrane (46, 46'). When the disposable portion is engaged with the reusable portion, the elastomeric membrane is in contact with a corresponding elastomeric membrane (50, 50'), which covers a pressure sensing cavity (52). A pressure transducer (56) is mounted in the pressure sensing cavity, and the pressure sensing cavity is filled with a fluid and is in fluid communication with a reservoir(38) when not engaged with the disposable portion. When the disposable portion is brought into engagement with the reusable portion, a passage (54, 53) connecting the reservoir with the pressure sensing cavity is blocked, thereby minimizing the volume of fluid within the pressure sensing cavity. In this way, the compliance of the pressure sensing portion is reduced, so that its frequency response is increased. In one embodiment of the pressure monitoring apparatus (100), a slider (110) is provided for covering the elastomeric membrane used on the disposable portion so that exposure of the elastomeric membrane to a fluid pressurized to a level in excess of the rated pressure for the membrane does not damage the membrane.
