An electrical power system includes an electrical power distribution network and a control device configured to regulate at least one attribute of said electrical power system. The electrical power system further includes a processor coupled to the control device configured to identify an out-of-bound condition on said electrical power distribution network at a first time. The out-of-bound condition is associated with the at least one attribute. The processor is also configured to determine a trend for the at least one attribute at a second time that is later than the first time after a predetermined delay time elapses. The trend indicates a direction away from at least one of a predetermined range and a predetermined value. The processor is also configured to transmit a control action to said control device based at least in part on the trend.

System and method for controlling a power distribution network

A system for accelerated assessment of operational uncertainties in an electrical power distribution system includes a plurality of utility assets, and a distribution analysis ('DA') system. DA system includes a preparation module configured to identify a first network model and a reduced network model for the electrical power distribution system. DA system also includes an input module configured to identify a plurality of scenarios, and a reduced-model-analysis module configured to analyze the reduced network model using the plurality of scenarios, generating a first set of results, and to select a subset of scenarios based on the first set of results. DA system further includes a full-model-analysis module configured to analyze the first network model using the subset of scenarios, generating a second set of results. DA system also includes a command module configured to dispatch configuration commands to utility assets based on the second set of results.

System and method for accelerated assessment of operational uncertainties in electrical power distribution systems

A phase balancing system includes a load forecasting module, a phase unbalance identification module and a demand response module. The load forecasting module determines a load forecast for the distribution system for the period of interest and the phase unbalance identification module determines voltage unbalance on the distribution system for the period of interest. The demand response module estimates an available demand response on the distribution system for the period of interest and allocates an optimized demand response from the available demand response to minimize the voltage unbalance on the distribution system for the period of interest.

System and method for phase balancing in a power distribution system

A protection system for a power distribution system includes a bus voltage sensing unit to measure a bus voltage or a load voltage and a demand response module for estimating available demand resources on the distribution system for a period of interest. A distribution system analyzer is provided in the system for analyzing the bus voltage or the load voltage and system parameters to obtain voltage trip points for the available demand resources. A load control circuit controls the available demand resources based on the voltage trip points.

Distribution protection system and method

A system and method for simultaneously restoring power to loads in a distribution network that experienced an outage. The pickup load on the feeder in the distribution network is estimated and the load limit on the feeder is determined. The load on the feeder is divided into groups based on the load limit. A restoration load control process is determined, and power is restored to each of the groups simultaneously based on the power restoration control process.

System and method for managing cold load pickup using demand response

Systems and methods for implementing line overload control via providing distributed series impedance are disclosed. One system, amongst others, comprises at least one distributed series reactor (DSR). Each DSR comprises a single turn transformer (SST) comprising two split-core sections (), a winding (), and an air-gap (), the air-gap designed such that a magnetizing inductance is produced when the two split-core sections () are clamped around a conductor (). Each DSR further comprises a contact switch () that short circuits the winding when the contact switch () is in a closed condition, a power supply () that derives power from conductor line current, and a controller () configured to open the contact switch when the conductor line current reaches a predetermined value, thus causing insertion of the magnetizing inductance into the conductor. The controller () may be further configured to close the contact switch () when the conductor line current drops below the predetermined value.
