A method of estimating a pose of a head for a person, includes estimating the pose of the head for the person based on a content, and generating a three-dimensional (3D) model of a face for the person. The method further includes generating pictorial structures of the face based on the estimated pose and the 3D model, and determining a refined pose of the head by locating parts of the face in the pictorial structures.

The present invention provides a method and system of generating multilayered point based 3D representation of a scene. The method includes constructing an alpha model of randomly selected regions associated with objects with similar depth value and depth jump in a depth map of a scene, and identifying mixed pixel regions associated with edges of the objects. The method further includes estimating color, depth and transparency values for pixels in each identified mixed pixel region using associated color information from an image map of the scene, associated depth value information from the depth map, and transparency information from the alpha model based on the associated depth information. The method includes generating a multi-layered point based 3D representation of the scene by organizing the estimated color, transparency, and depth values. Moreover, the method includes rendering 3D views of the scene using the multi-layered point based 3D representation of the scene.

An apparatus and method are provided for recognizing an emotion of an individual based on Action Units. The method includes receiving an input AU string including one or more AUs that represents a facial expression of an individual from an AU detector; matching the input AU string with each of a plurality of AU strings, wherein each of the plurality of AU strings includes a set of highly discriminative AUs, each representing an emotion; identifying an AU string from the plurality of AU strings that best matches the input AU string; and outputting an emotion label corresponding to the best matching AU string that indicates the emotion of the individual.
