Embodiments of the invention are directed to a system for detecting neurotransmitters. A non-limiting example of the system includes a porous electrode. A system can also include a pH sensor attached to the porous electrode, wherein the pH sensor includes a sensing electrode and a reference electrode. The system can also include electronic circuitry in communication with the pH sensor.

Antibacterial coatings and methods of making the antibacterial coatings are described herein. A first branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) layer is formed and a first glyoxal layer is formed on a surface of the BPEI layer. The first BPEI layer and the first glyoxal layer are cured to form a crosslinked BPEI coating. The first BPEI layer can be modified with superhydrophobic moieties, superhydrophilic moieties, or negatively charged moieties to increase the antifouling characteristics of the coating. The first BPEI layer can be modified with contact-killing bactericidal moieties to increase the bactericidal characteristics of the coating.

Prevention of biofilm formation

A method for forming a nanostructure includes coating an exposed surface of a base layer with a patterning layer. The method further includes forming a pattern in the patterning layer including nano-patterned non-random openings, such that a bottom portion of the non-random openings provides direct access to the exposed surface of the base layer. The method also includes depositing a material in the non-random openings in the patterning layer, such that the material contacts the exposed surface to produce repeating individually articulated nano-scale features. The method includes removing remaining portions of the patterning layer. The method further includes forming an encapsulation layer on exposed surfaces of the repeating individually articulated nanoscale features and the exposed surface of the base layer.

A probe controller controls a probe to perform the method that includes emitting, by a light source of the probe, the probe is embeddable in a tissue, a light wave to interact with a corresponding chemical in one or more cells in the tissue. The method further includes capturing, by a sensor of the probe, a spectroscopy of the light wave interacting with the corresponding chemical. The method further includes sending, by the probe, the spectroscopy to an analysis system. The method further includes receiving, by the probe, from the analysis system, adjusted parameters for the light source, and adjusting, by a controller of the probe, settings of the light source according to the received adjusted parameters to emit a different light wave to interact with the corresponding chemical.

Embodiments are directed to a method of forming a magnetic stack arrangement of a laminated magnetic inductor having a high frequency peak quality factor (Q). A first magnetic stack is formed having one or more magnetic layers alternating with one or more insulating layers in a first inner region of a laminated magnetic inductor. A second magnetic stack is formed opposite a surface of the first magnetic stack in an outer region of the laminated magnetic inductor. A third magnetic stack is formed opposite a surface of the second magnetic stack in a second inner region of the laminated magnetic inductor. The insulating layers are formed such that a thickness of an insulating layer in the second magnetic stack is greater than a thickness of an insulating layer in the first magnetic stack.

A three-dimensional (3D) comb probe structure includes a carrier, a plurality of combs arranged in the carrier and spaced apart from one another, a plurality of shanks forming the combs, each shank including a base portion and a stem portion extending from the base portion, wherein sets of the shanks are joined together by the base portions thereof to form a respective comb, and a plurality of sensing elements disposed along the stem portion of each of the shanks and electrically connected to electrical contacts disposed at respective ones of the base portions. Embodiments of the invention are directed to a method of fabricating a yoke arrangement of an inductor. A non-limiting example method includes forming a dielectric layer across from a major surface of a substrate. A magnetic stack is formed on an opposite side of the dielectric layer from the substrate, wherein the magnetic stack includes one or more magnetic layers alternating with one or more insulating layers. The method further includes configuring the magnetic stack such that it imparts a predetermined magnetic stack tensile stress on the dielectric layer, wherein a net effect of the predetermined dielectric layer compressive stress and the predetermined magnetic stack tensile stress on the substrate is insufficient to cause a portion of the major surface of the substrate to be substantially non-planar.
