A method for processing backup generation requests includes receiving a backup generation request; in response to receiving the backup generation request: identifying a backup to transfer to a backup storage, the backup includes data blocks; performing a data allocation analysis on the backup to generate an offset table; dividing, based on at least the offset table, the backup into sub-portions, each of the sub-portions includes at least one of the data blocks; and transferring, using at least two data streams, at least two of the sub-portions to a backup storage.

Method and system for an optimized backup data transfer mechanism

A rule specifies a data change percent and a backup level to use corresponding to the data change percent. The backup level may be a full backup or a non-full backup. Before backing up a source for an impending backup, a percent of data change of the source from a last backup of the source to the impending backup is calculated. The rule is evaluated against the calculated percent change to select a backup level for the impending backup. Based on the evaluation, the full backup level or non-full backup level is selected and the source is backed up according to the selected backup level.

A production host for hosting virtual machines includes a persistent storage and a production agent. The persistent storage stores a backup groupings queue and a backup process stack. The production agent obtains backup generation requests for the virtual machines; in response to obtaining the backup generation requests, generates the backup groupings queue based on the backup generation requests; identifies a maximum parallelism of the production host based on resources utilized by a portion of the virtual machines specified by the backup groupings queue; consolidates the backup groupings queue to generate the backup process stack; and generates backups for virtual machines specified by the backup process stack in parallel based on the maximum parallelism.

System and method of backup grouping with improved computational efficiency

A remote backup agent that provides data storage services to virtual machines includes a persistent storage and a processor. The persistent storage stores workflows for the virtual machines. The processor performs a first remote backup of the virtual machines based on the workflows using production agents hosted by production hosts that also host the virtual machines; obtains a workflow update; updates the workflows based on the workflow update to obtain updated workflows; and performs a second remote backup of the virtual machines based on the updated workflows using the production hosts without modifying the production agents.

System and method for backup in a virtualized environment

A production host for hosting virtual machines includes a persistent storage and a production agent. The persistent storage stores virtual machine data associated with a virtual machine of the virtual machines and a virtual machine shadow copy associated with the virtual machine data. The production agent obtains a backup generation request for the virtual machine; in response to the backup generation request, generates the virtual machine shadow copy; makes a determination that the virtual machine shadow copy comprises an auto-recovery disk that comprises some data; in response to the determination, merges the virtual machine shadow copy using a parent block set storage template to obtain a backup of the virtual machine; and store the backup in backup storage. The parent block set storage template is not associated with the virtual machine shadow copy.

System and method for improved application consistency in a distributed environment

A request is received to restore a set of virtual machines (VMs) to a cluster of nodes. The nodes are profiled to collect, for each node, a current load and health status. A participating node list is generated by excluding from the list any node having a current load that exceeds a threshold or having a health status of unavailable. For each participating node, a determination is made of a recommended number of VMs to assign to a node based on a current load of the node. A participating node and VM to restore is selected. The selected VM is assigned to the selected participating node. The selection and assignment is repeated until each participating node has been assigned its respective number of VMs to restore or all VMs to restore have been assigned. The participating nodes are instructed to begin restoring their assigned VMs.
