A method for calculating a rate of UV radiation absorbed by a user's skin including: capturing image data of an area of the user's skin; determining a skin tone of the user's skin based on the captured image data; calculating a rate of UV radiation absorption for the determined skin tone; measuring an amount of UV radiation exposed to the user's skin; and calculating a rate of UV radiation that would be absorbed by the user's skin based on the user's skin tone and the amount of UV radiation exposed to the user's skin. The method can further comprise calculating an amount of time that the user can be exposed to the amount of UV radiation exposed to the user's skin based on predetermined criteria. The predetermined criteria can at least include an SPF level of sunscreen applied to the user's skin.

A photoepilation device including a compact hand piece applicator and a portable electronics module for use in a non-medical setting. The hand piece, which contains no electrical signals, allows the user to focus on individual hair follicles by observing a magnified image provided on a semiconductor display. A method and system is disclosed for determining a flight characteristic of an object in a flight path, the flight characteristic to be determined can be the object's position while in flight, a linear velocity, a rotational velocity or an acceleration of the object. In one embodiment, the method comprises arranging a radiation source in a plane, the plane being located to intersect the flight path of the object. The radiation source irradiates the object at least at the intersection with the flight path. The object is provided with at least first and second surface features having a predetermined configuration such as, for example, equally spaced parallel lines painted on the surface of the object. Reflected radiation from the object is measured with a sensor from the surface features and a flight characteristic of the object is determined based on the measured reflected radiation and the predetermined configuration of the surface features.

System and method for the measurement of the velocity and acceleration of objects

A capillary waveguide fluorescence sensor which includes a capillary and an optical/fluid connector connected to an end of the capillary. The optical/fluid connector includes a fluid sample injection port for longitudinally injecting a fluid sample into the capillary bore and at least one optical fiber for either longitudinally delivering light energy into the capillary or longitudinally collecting fluorescence emission from the fluid sample injected into the capillary bore. The sensor may also include at least one capillary outer surface collection optical fiber for perpendicularly collecting fluorescence emission from the fluid sample injected into the capillary bore. The capillary outer surface collection optical fiber is positioned adjacent the outer surface of the capillary wall such that the central axis of the collection optical fiber is substantially perpendicular to the central axis of the capillary bore. In a method for sensing fluorescence emission from a fluid sample, the fluid sample is longitudinally injected into a bore of a capillary and the fluid sample is excited by longitudinally delivering light energy into the capillary. Fluorescence emission caused by the excitation from the fluid sample may be collected by at least one optical fiber positioned substantially perpendicularly to the central axis of the capillary bore or it may be longitudinally collected by at least one optical fiber positioned substantially parallel with the central axis of the capillary bore.

An apparatus for determining the size or other physical properties of particles executing Brownian motion is provided. An integrated fiber optic probe, including a length of a gradient index multimode optical fiber fusion spliced to a monomode optical fiber, delivers laser light to a scattering medium such that the light scattered in the backward direction is collected by another integrated fiber optic probe mounted into the same cylindrical housing. A step index fiber may be fusion spliced between the monomode and gradient index multimode fibers. The axes of the fibers may be collinear or offset. The scattered light, after conversion to a series of photoelectron pulses, is processed to determine the mean particle diameter. The temporal coherence of the scattered field from submicroscopic particles illuminated by laser light is a function of both the integration time and the particle diameter. The temporal degree of coherence of the time averaged scattered intensity decreases as the integration time increases. Statistical processing of the scattered photons leads to a new method of particle sizing, which circumvents the need for digital autocorrelation.

Method and apparatus for submicroscopic particle sizing, and probe

A system and method are disclosed for efficient laser illumination of the interiors of multiple capillaries simultaneously, and collection of light emitted from them. Capillaries in a parallel array can form an optical waveguide wherein refraction at the cylindrical surfaces confines side-on illuminating light to the core of each successive capillary in the array. Methods are provided for determining conditions where capillaries will form a waveguide and for assessing and minimizing losses due to reflection. Light can be delivered to the arrayed capillaries through an integrated fiber optic transmitter or through a pair of such transmitters aligned coaxially at opposite sides of the array. Light emitted from materials within the capillaries can be carried to a detection system through optical fibers, each of which collects light from a single capillary, with little cross talk between the capillaries. The collection ends of the optical fibers can be in a parallel array with the same spacing as the capillary array, so that the collection fibers can all be aligned to the capillaries simultaneously. Applicability includes improving the efficiency of many analytical methods that use capillaries, including particularly high-throughput DNA sequencing and diagnostic methods based on capillary electrophoresis.

A method and apparatus for determining the physical characteristics of ocular tissue is provided. A lens-less monomode fiber is caused to generate an expanding beam of monochromatic laser light into ocular tissue such that the light is scattered by the tissue in the backward direction. A second optical fiber, which is multimode at the wavelength of the light passing through the monomode transmission fiber, coherently detects light scattered by the ocular tissue. The scattered light received by the second optical fiber is converted into an electrical signal, which is subsequently analyzed to determine whether changes in the molecular structure of the ocular tissue have occurred.

A system for determining the physical properties of materials through the use of dynamic light scattering is disclosed. The system includes a probe, a laser source for directing a laser beam into the probe, and a photodetector for converting scattered light detected by the probe into electrical signals. The probe includes at least one optical fiber connected to the laser source and a second optical fiber connected to the photodetector. Each of the fibers may adjoin a gradient index microlens which is capable of providing a collimated laser beam into a scattering medium. The position of the second optical fiber with respect to the optical axis of the probe determines whether homodyne or self-beating detection is provided. Self-beating detection may be provided without a gradient index microlens. This allows a very small probe to be constructed which is insertable through a hypodermic needle or the like into a droplet extending from such a needle. A method of detecting scattered light through the use of a collimated, Gaussian laser beam is also provided. A method for controlling the waist and divergence of the optical field emanating from the free end of an optical fiber is also provided.

The angular aperture and the divergence of the probe are designed specifically to satisfy the scattering volume and coherence requirements for laser light scattering and spectroscopic measurements. The detector includes a housing which defines an elongate cell therein and a selected number of detector ports extending at various angles with respect to the cell.
