The foam product for hair treatment includes a composition containing a cationic cellulose derivative, chitosan, acid for partial or complete neutralization of the chitosan and a suitable solvent. The weight ratio of the cationic cellulose derivative to the chitosan is less than 2. The composition is either provided with a propellant or is foamed with a mechanically operated foam-making device.

A cosmetic preparation in gel form is described which contains undissolved, water-swollen polymer particles and at the interface with gaseous substances forms reversibly a grainy, uneven, light-scattering surface and at the interface with solids forms reversibly a smooth, level, non-light-scattering surface. Preferred gel formers are superabsorbing polymers. A preferred use is the hair-end protection in permanent wave treatment.

Cosmetic preparation in gel form

The hair styling stick contains from 30 to 55 percent by weight of one or more polyethylene glycols with a molecular weight of from 2500 to 5000 g/mol; and from 40 to 70 percent by weight of at least one other polyethylene glycol with a molecular weight of from 570 to 800 g/mol together with cosmetic ingredients. In preferred embodiments the hair styling stick contains from 30 to 55 percent by weight of one or more polyethylene glycols with a molecular weight of from 2500 to 5000 g/mol; from 15 to 35 percent by weight of one or more polyethylene glycols with a molecular weight of from 850 to 1600 g/mol, from 15 to 35 percent by weight of one or more liquid polyethylene glycols with a molecular weight of from 570 to 800 g/mol and additional cosmetic ingredients, as needed. The additional cosmetic ingredients can include an aqueous or organic solvent, emulsifier, perfume or fragrance, dye, preservative and/or pearlescence-imparting agent.

Cosmetic agent in the form of a gel

The aqueous hair fixing gel has special rheological properties so that it can be dispensed from a container without dripping or becoming stringy. It contains from 1.5 to 10 percent by weight of at least one itaconic acid monoester/acrylate copolymer and from 0.1 to 15 percent by weight of at least one non-ionic, anionic, zwitterionic or amphoteric hair-fixing polymer. The itaconic acid monoester has a formula CH &boxH;C(COOR )CH COOR , wherein one of R and R represents hydrogen and the other represents &mdash;(CH CH O) &mdash;R , x is between 1 to 100 and R is an alkyl group having 8 to 30 carbon atoms. The aqueous hair treatment gel has a pH of greater than 7 and a viscosity of preferably from 2000 to 50,000 mPa.s, as measured at 25&deg; C. The gel is formulated so that there is a gel viscosity maximum as a function of shear rate with increasing shear rate, preferably between 0.1 to 5.0 s .

Gasified particles for cosmetic treatments, particularly hair treatments, are described. The gasified particles contain at least one gas enclosed in a solid enveloping material. The enveloping material is selected so that the gas is released on contact of the enveloping material with water or moisture. The release of the gas can be accompanied by a detectable acoustic effect (pop effect). The hair treatment composition also can provide a hair fixing effect. Furthermore an instant gel preparation is described substantially comprising a mixture of dry substances, which contains at least one gel former and at least one solid substance producing a detectable acoustic effect on contact with moisture, especially gasified particles. The gasified particles are used as acoustic indicators for the readiness of the instant preparation after liquid addition.

Methods of performing cosmetic treatments with gasified solid particles and instant gel preparations containing the gasified solid particles

The aqueous-alcoholic hair fixing composition contains from 0.1 to 10 percent by weight of shellac, neutralized from 50 to 100%; from 0.01 to 20 percent by weight of at least one film-forming hair fixing synthetic polymer, advantageously a terpolymer made from octylacrylamide, t-butylamino-ethylmethacrylate and at least two monomers selected from the group consisting of methacrylic acid, esters of acrylic acid and esters of methacrylic acid; from 30 to 70 percent by weight of at least one alcohol containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; from 30 to 70 percent by weight water; and, for compositions to be sprayed by means of a propellant, from 15 to 85% by weight of a propellant, advantageously dimethylether, an alkane, N,, N,O or CO,. The combination of the shellac and the synthetic hair fixing polymer causes a synergistic viscosity lowering which advantageously promotes rinsibility without impairing fixing performance.

The skin and hair treatment composition includes 0.5 to 2 percent by weight apple wax, 0.1 to 30 percent by weight of at least one anionic, cationic, amphoteric and/or nonionic surfactant, a solvent consisting of water, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, glycols or mixtures thereof and one or more cosmetic additives selected from the group consisting of perfume oils; opacifiers; pearlescing agents; bacterial and fungicidal ingredients; coconut fatty acid diethanolamide; buffer substances; coloring materials; solubilizers; light stabilizers; antioxidants; complexing agents and antidandruff active ingredients. Methods for obtaining the apple wax used in these compositions include extraction of depectinized apple pomace with a variety of solvents and purification and evaporation of the extract to obtain an apple wax product.

Macromolecular, surface-active, quaternary, N-substituted chitosan

A cosmetic composition is disclosed for the treatment of hair or skin, based upon 0.05 to 10% by weight of chitosan, and characterized by a content of 0.05 to 20% by weight of an ampholytic copolymerizate of formula (I) ##STR1## wherein m=0.5 to 0.9, n=0.1 to 0.5, m+n=1 and p being such that the ampholytic copolymerizate has a molecular weight of from 1,000 to 3,000,000. wherein m=0.1 to 0.9 and n=0.5 to 0.9. The composition provides clear, smooth films, which are neither sticky in moist climate, nor brittle in dry climate. Also disclosed are new chitosan/polyampholyte salts, obtained by reaction of chitosan with an ampholytic copolymerizate of formula (I).

The quaternary chitosan derivatives useful in cosmetic compositions are made by a process comprising reacting a chitosan consisting of 50 to 100% deacetylized chitin or a structurally modified chitosan made by reprecipitating and deep freezing, with glycidyl trialkyl ammonium halogenide, particularly glycidyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, and, if necessary, with glycidol. The reaction mixture is advantageously stirred for several hours at 10.degree. to 100.degree. C. The reaction may be performed in the presence of an organic or inorganic acid or base in water.
