A method of generating an aggregate frame having a header unit, which carries MAC-header information applicable to one or more data units of said aggregate frame. Since each data unit of the aggregate frame no longer needs to carry the full MAC-header information, the overhead associated with the MAC header can be significantly reduced. At the receiver, the full MAC header corresponding to the data unit is reconstructed by (i) matching the appropriate header and data units to one another and (ii) combining the information present in the header unit and the compressed header portion of the data unit. Embodiments of the present invention are capable of improving the data throughput, for example, in an entertainment network having paired source and destination devices (e.g., a DVD player and an LCD screen) with a relatively large amount of data streamed from the former to the latter.

MAC header compression for use with frame aggregation

A power management method, in which creation of deliver opportunities for a wireless station (STA) of a WLAN system is managed using a designated sub-field of the frame control field in a MAC header. In one embodiment, the STA is adapted (i) to use the power management sub-field to communicate its power state to the access point (AP) and (ii) to run a periodicity timer, which starts when the STA has transitioned to the doze state. The STA transitions to the awake state either when it has a data frame available for transmission to the AP or when the periodicity timer runs out. In another embodiment, the AP and STA create deliver opportunities by entering a new mode of operation referred to as interactive traffic power management (ITPM) mode, during which the power management sub-field is ignored and the more data sub-field is used to communicate the power state and manage transitions of the STA between the awake and doze states. Embodiments of the invention improve WLAN system performance when the traffic load is such that data frames become available for transmission both at the STA and AP at relatively regular intervals, which is typically the case for interactive voice-over-WLAN applications.

Power management method for creating deliver opportunities in a wireless communication system

Methods and apparatus are disclosed for automatically detecting when an operating channel needs to be changed in a wireless communication system. An alternate channel is selected by obtaining information about a plurality of available channels; assigning a score to each available channel; and selecting an alternate channel from the available channels based on the assigned score. The state of the selected alternate channel and the current channel are compared. A change to the selected alternate channel is initiated when one or more predefined criteria are satisfied.

Method and apparatus for automatic change of an operating channel in a wireless communication system

A method and mechanism for quickly and easily connecting wireless consumer electronic devices with each other without affecting other wireless devices in the vicinity, by bringing devices into close proximity while in a whisper mode of communication. In whisper mode, the reception and/or transmission capability is significantly reduced, limiting the distance over which the devices communicate, allowing for secure exchange of communications parameters The parameters exchanged in whisper mode may be used to enable unique, paired communication between the two devices, or between one of them and any other device already connected to a common network, when operating in their normal mode of operation, separated by any distance within the normal operational range of the devices.
