A cell stack comprising a plurality of fuel cells or electrolysis cells has a combination of flow patterns between anode gas and cathode gas internally in each of the cells and between the cells relative to each other such that cathode and anode gas internally in a cell flows in either co-flow, counter-flow or cross-flow and further that anode and cathode gas flow in one cell has co-flow, counter-flow or cross-flow relative to the anode and cathode gas flow in adjacent cells.

A large, scalable SOFC system based on modules, which may be connected in series on the cathode gas side. The fuel cell stacks are aligned side by side and assembled into a stack module with cathode inlets on one face of the module and the cathode outlets on the other face of the module. The stack modules are serially connected in a simple manner by placing the stack modules one after the other, so that the outlet face of the first module faces the inlet face of the second module and so on. In the chamber between two stack modules, the air is cooled for example by addition of cold quench air or by a heat exchanger. This offers compactness, simple stack/system interface and improved system performance. The modules are designed for manufacturability, well-balanced heat management and high fuel utilization.

The invention provides an interconnect device for a fuel cell comprising an electrolyte, an anode and a cathode, the interconnect device comprising a channel system having a plurality of channels, each channel being closed in one end and having either an inlet side or an outlet side at the open end of the channel, each channel having an inlet side placed in alternating order with a channel having an outlet side, the inlet side of each channel placed in consecutive order on one side of the interconnect, and the outlet sides of each channel placed in consecutive order on the opposite side of the interconnect relative to the inlet side, and a second layer of channels is located on the surface of the channel system. The invention also provides a fuel cell and a fuel cell stack in which the interconnect device is used.
