A light metal piston for internal combustion engines which includes a bearing bushing comprising a shell wrapped from a rolled strip or band shaped metal material. The shell has a butt joint which is closed in a pressed-in state, with a preferred orientation of the metallurgical grain areas being formed in the circumferential direction of the shell.

In order to ensure in sliding surface bearings a uniform distribution of the load over the bearing metal layer, a phosphate layer serving as a sliding layer has been applied to the bearing metal layer. In order to ensure a high resistantce to scuffing, the sliding layer is formed from an aqueous phosphating solution which contains 1.5 to 5.0 g/l Zn, 12 to 24 g/l Na, 11 to 22 g/l P.sub.2 O.sub.5, 17 to 33 g/l 16 to 30 g/l BF.sub.4, 20 to 39 g/l B(OH).sub.3 and 1.0 to 6.0 g/l NaF.

Sliding layers overlays produced by cathode sputtering comprise a matrix-forming metallic material and at least one other material which is substantially insoluble in the matrix have greatly improved mechanical and corrosion resistance properties, if the insoluble material has a lower melting point than the matrix material, and if the diameters of the particles of the insoluble material are statistically normally distributed with mean x&lt;0.8 .mu.m. Such overlays are produced with the temperature of the substrate maintained below 150.degree. C. during the sputtering process. A synchronizing ring is composed of a composite material comprising a metallic layer consisting of aluminum alloy and having a thickness of 0.1 to 1.0 mm forming a friction cone and a steel backing layer having a thickness of 0.5 to 3.5 mm and cladded to the metallic layer. A composite bearing material for use in the manufacture of crankshaft bearings comprises a steel strip, which is provided on one side, which is to be used disposed on the outside of the bearing, with an elastic layer, and on the other side, which is to be disposed on the inside of the bearing, with a bearing metal layer. In order to effect a sound insulation, in a particularly desirable manner the elastic layer consists of halogen-free polymers.
