The invention relates to a multi-layered biaxially-oriented film, mainly made of a crystallizeable thermoplastic polyester and economically produceable with a high surface quality, i.e. without pinning bubbles and without electric arcing and film breaks, at production speeds of 340 m/min or higher. According to the invention the multi-layered polyester film has an average specific electrical melt resistance over its total thickness which lies within a range from 1.5&times;10 to 30&times;10 &OHgr;&times;cm. The present invention relates to an at least single-layer, biaxially oriented film support for magnetic recording media which is predominantly composed of crystallizable polyester, having a thickness in the range from 1 to 40 &mgr;m. The film has, over its total roll length and roll width and after it has been made up into customer rolls, an electrostatic charge build-up which is in the range from &minus;80 kV/m to &plus;80 kV/m, the contact pressure at the roll cutters during make-up being set in the range from 300 N/m to 350 N/m. The film is drawn between electrical discharge means, which are arranged close to the roll, along the film path in the make-up machine, and is particularly suitable for high-quality audio, video or computer tapes and for floppy disks or thermal tapes.

A device for laying a molten film 3 emerging from a slot die 2 onto a rotating take-off chill roll 1 has at least one electrode which is arranged parallel to and at a short distance from the surface of the take-off roll 1 and to which a high voltage in the range from 4 to 12 kV is applied. This electrode is, for example, a metal strip 5 which has a tapering sharp edge 6 that is oriented toward the surface of the take-off roll 1. In addition to this metal strip 5, a second electrode 27 is arranged at a distance from the surface of the take-off roll. This second electrode is a metal strip without a strip edge and has applied to it a voltage of a magnitude that is equal to or different from that of the metal strip 5. As a result, electric fields are formed in addition to the electric field from the one metal strip electrode 5.

In a filter apparatus 1, a central filter rod 6 is arranged in the interior 14 of a filter housing 2, the diameter d of which filter rod tapers in the direction of flow of the plastic melt. On the filter rod 6 are arranged filter discs 7 which are parallel to one another and have outer and inner diameters of equal size. The filter apparatus 1 operates as a continuous-flow filter apparatus in which the plastic melt flows in via an intake 4 and flows out via an outlet 5. A filter housing wall inner surface 3 tapers in the direction of flow of the plastic melt, so that a gap width h.sub.a (x) between a filter disc outer rim 8 and the filter housing wall inner surface 3 decreases in the direction of flow of the plastic melt.

A device for smoothing out the thickness of a sheet of thermoplastic material which includes a sheet die and a heating device which is integrated with the upper die lip of the sheet die. The heating device includes a hollow box filled with a liquid and a bar which projects laterally beyond the endfaces of the hollow box. The inlet and outlet openings of the bar in the hollow box are sealed. Arranged on the underside of the bar are small hot plates which are electrically heated. The liquid in the hollow box serves as a heat transfer medium and typically is an oil having a boiling point higher than 280.degree. C. The thickness profile of the extruded sheet is controlled, on the one hand, via controlling elements and, on the other hand, remaining thick and/or thin points of the sheet profile are smoothed by the bar of the heating device, in which the bar is progressively moved transversely with respect to the running direction of the sheet across the sheet width with the aid of a motor into a position in which the small hot plates are aligned with the thick/thin points to be smoothed. The corresponding thick/thin points of the sheet are smoothed by exposing the small hot plates to different temperatures or heating powers.
