Tuning result records indicating tuned schedules for machine learning tuning tasks are stored at a data store accessed from a tuning service. A given schedule indicates at least an order in which sub-operations of a tuning task are to be executed. In response to determining that the data store does not include a result record whose tuning task meets a similarity criterion to a tuning task determined from a tuning request, performance predictions for a set of candidate schedules are obtained using a performance prediction model, without running code which executes the candidate schedules. In a response to the tuning request, executable code corresponding to a preferred schedule identified from the candidate schedules using the performance predictions is included.

An eye-tracking system includes a substrate transparent to visible light and configured to be placed in a field of view of an eye of a user, a plurality of waveguides on the substrate, a light source optically coupled to the plurality of waveguides, and a plurality of polarization volume holograms (PVHs) in the field of view of the eye of the user. Each PVH of the plurality of PVHs is optically coupled to a respective waveguide of the plurality of waveguides and is configured to couple a respective light beam out of the respective waveguide towards the eye of the user.

Orientations of directors of optically anisotropic molecules included in the birefringent medium layer varying periodically with an in-plane pitch tunable by an external field to adjust a diffraction angle of a light beam diffracted by the birefringent medium layer.

An optical assembly includes a beam steering device and a holographic optical element. The beam steering device is switchable between different states including a first state and a second state. The beam steering device includes a first polarization-selective optical element and a first tunable optical retarder optically coupled with the first polarization-selective optical element. The holographic optical element is positioned relative to the beam steering device for receiving light from the beam steering device and projecting a first light pattern while the beam steering device is in the first state and a second light pattern distinct from the first light pattern while the beam steering device is in the second state.

A method for aligning molecular orientations of liquid crystals and/or polymeric materials into spatially variant patterns uses metamasks. When non-polarized or circularly polarized light is transmitted through or reflected by the metamasks, spatially varied polarization direction and intensity patterns of light can be generated. By projecting the optical patterns of the metamasks onto substrates coated with photoalignment materials, spatially variant molecular orientations encoded in the polarization and intensity patterns are induced in the photoalignment materials, and transfer into the liquid crystals. Possible designs for the metamask use nanostructures of metallic materials (e.g., rectangular nanocuboids of metallic materials arrayed on a transparent substrate).

A wavefront sensor for determining a wavefront of an impinging light beam includes a microlens array formed by nanoimprint lithography. Each microlens of the microlens array includes a plurality of concentric ridges separated by concentric grooves. A ratio F of a width of the concentric ridges to a pitch p of the concentric ridges is a function of a radial distance r from a microlens center to the concentric ridges. An effective refractive index n of microlenses depends on a fill ratio of a binary pattern, which depends on the radial distance from the microlens center. A photodetector array is disposed downstream of the microlens array and configured for receiving the plurality of light spots at the focal plane. An imaging optical rangefinder includes the wavefront sensor, a pulsed light source for emitting probing pulses, and a photodetector for receiving reflected light pulses.
