Exemplary embodiments include tracking processing time metrics of multiple server queries. A processing time per query type is estimated using the tracked processing time metrics. A current queue wait time is estimated based on a number of queries currently in the queue and the estimated processing times of query types for each of the queries currently in the queue. Upon receiving a current server query from a client, the current query type is mapped to an estimated processing time determined using the tracked processing time metrics. An estimated response time is determined using the current queue wait time and the estimated processing time. The server query is rejected from being added to the queue in response to determining the estimated response time does not satisfy a service level objective and an error message is sent to the client indicating the rejection of the server query.

A virtual computer system includes virtualization software, and one or more physical network interfaces for connecting to one or more computer networks. The virtualization software supports one or more virtual machines (VMs), and exports one or more virtual network interfaces to the VM(s) to enable the VM(s) to access the computer network(s) through the physical network interface(s). The virtualization software modifies and filters network data frames from the VM(s) and from the physical network interface(s) to restrict one or more VMs to one or more virtual local area networks (VLANs) that are implemented within a VLAN topology. Restricting a VM to a VLAN limits the broadcast domain to which the VM belongs, which may reduce security risks facing the VM. Implementing the VLAN functionality within the virtualization software provides the functionality to every VM in the computer system, without requiring every VM to provide the functionality.

A network meeting application for providing network meetings, such as web conference meetings, runs on a presenter device. In response to a request for a network meeting from an attendee device, the presenter device creates a secure desktop separate from a working desktop. The presenter may use the secure desktop to share documents, presentations, or other applications with the attendee device. The attendee device is blocked from accessing the working desktop of the presenter device. A presenter using the presenter device may switch between the working desktop and the secure desktop. Security policies, downloaded to the presenter device from a server, determine the applications the attendee may run on the secure desktop. The secure desktop thereby protects the integrity of the presenter's working desktop during a web conference meeting, while allowing documents, presentations, or other applications to be shared with attendees via the secure desktop.

A method for protecting a virtual computer system which may be susceptible to adverse effects from a Denial of Service attack is described. The virtual computer system includes a plurality of VMs. In the method, data that is transferred between the virtual computer system and the computer network is monitored for an indication of a possible Denial of Service attack. If an indication of a possible Denial of Service attack is detected, one or more of the VMs is suspended, to reduce the risk of adverse effects on one or more other VMs.

Managing network data transfers in a virtual computer system

A virtual computer system, including one or more virtual machines (VMs), is connected to a computer network by multiple network interface cards (NICs). The VMs are supported by a kernel, which includes a resource manager for allocating system resources among the VMs, including network data bandwidth. A NIC manager is loaded into the kernel as a driver or is integrated into the kernel, for selecting NICs over which outgoing network data is transferred, including providing functions such as failovers and failbacks, as well as load distribution. Implementing the NIC manager in the kernel provides NIC teaming functions to each of the VMs without having to implement a NIC teaming solution in each of the VMs, adding to the simplicity, flexibility and portability of the VMs. In addition, integrating the NIC manager into the kernel improves the kernel's ability to manage the VMs and to implement network resource allocations for the VMs.

A linearized thermal and optical model of an optical integrated circuit can be used to temperature-stabilize one or more optical elements of the circuit using active temperature regulation. To stabilize a single optical element, a temperature sensor and a heater can be provided proximate to the grating. Thermal and optical coefficients can be then used to select an appropriate temperature set-point for the temperature controller that receives readings from the sensor and determines the power dissipated in the heater. Multiple optical elements can be stabilized individually, using the same process and lumping cross-heating factors together with other environmental factors. Alternatively, multiple AWG's can be stabilized using fewer sensors than optical elements, by stabilizing one of the optical elements in the same manner as in the case of a single optical elements, and determining power dissipated in the heaters of the remaining optical elements based on the linearized model.
