An anti-coking surface having a thickness up to 15 microns comprising from 15 to 50 wt. % of MnCrO(for example manganochromite); from 15 to 25 wt. % of CrMnNi(for example chromium manganese nickel); from 10 to 30 wt. % of CrFeO(for example chromium iron oxide); from 12 to 20 wt. % of CrO(for example eskolaite); from 4 to 20 wt. % of CuFeO(for example copper iron oxide); and less than 5 wt. % of one or more compounds chosen from FeO(OH), CrO(OH), CrMn, Si and SiO(either as silicon oxide or quartz) and less than 0.5 wt. % of aluminum in any form provided that the sum of the components is 100 wt. % is provided on steel.

In chemical processes for cracking hydrocarbons, reactors are subject to coking. This results in carburization of the metal substrate for the reactor leading to a reduced reactor life. If the reactor is subject to a decoke process, followed by a steam scour and nitrogenating there is a reduced tendency to carburization of the metal substrate improving the reactor life.

Decoking process

A substrate steel of the comprising from 0.01 to 0.60 wt. % of La, from 0.0 to 0.65 wt. % of Ce; from 0.06 to 1.8 wt. % of Nb up to 2.5 wt. % of one or more trace elements and carbon and silicon may be treated in an oxidizing atmosphere to product a coke resistant surface coating of MnCrOhaving a thickness up to 5 microns.

A method is presented of thermal decomposition to crack ethane and/or higher alkane hydrocarbon feed or the mixture of any of these hydrocarbons to break down into component elements or simpler constituents using heat from a hot metal agent from a chemical looping combustion process.

Thermal decomposition in chemical looping combustion

A pass or tube or a section thereof or 'U' bend in a coil in a paraffin cracker having section having a pore size in the metal substrate from about 0.001 to 0.5 microns over coated with a dense metal membrane permits the permeation of one or more of H, CH, CO and COfrom cracked gases moving the reaction equilibrium to the production of ethylene and reduces the load on the down-stream separation train of the steam cracker.

A transfer line between the outlet of a steam cracker and the inlet for the quench system has metallic or ceramic inserts having a pore size from about 0.001 to about 0.5 microns inside the line forming a gas tight barrier with the inner surface of the line and having a vent for the resulting gas tight pocket are used to separate H, CH, CO and COfrom cracked gases reducing the load on the down-stream separation train of the steam cracker.
