Electrically tunable millimeter wave resonators and methods for fabricating and operating the same are disclosed. Embodiments include tunable millimeter wave resonators utilizing rare-earth nickelates, such as samarium nickelate. Embodiments tune the resonating member to frequencies between 30 and 100 GHz by varying the electric field across a resonating member. Further embodiments include a resonating member mounted to (and optionally embedded in) a substrate with conductive material connected to the resonating member and the substrate, and the total thickness can be 0.2 millimeters or less, or 0.1 millimeters or less. Additional embodiments include resonating members with a maximum dimension of 0.3 millimeters. Some embodiments include a gap between the conductive material contacting the substrate and the conductive material contacting the resonating member. Additional embodiments include resonating members with a loss tangent of less than 0.001, a dielectric constant of at least 100, and/or a quality factor greater than 500.

Millimeter wave resonator apparatuses and methods

A system for receiving radio signals for a vehicle includes an antenna farm unit including a plurality of antennas, a plurality of amplifiers, each of the plurality of amplifiers in electrical communication with one of the plurality of antennas, and a multiplexer in electrical communication with the output port of each of the plurality of amplifiers. The system also includes a radio unit including a plurality of tuners and a demultiplexer in electrical communication with the plurality of tuners. The system also includes a transmission line for connecting the antenna farm unit to the radio unit, where the transmission line has a first terminal and a second terminal, and where the first terminal of the transmission line is electrically connected to the multiplexer and the second terminal of the transmission line is electrically connected to the demultiplexer.

Single-cable radio antenna system for a vehicle

A power amplifier module can be formed that includes metamaterial matching circuits. This power amplifier module can be included as part of a front-end module of a wireless device. The front-end module can replace a passive duplexer with an active duplexer that uses the power amplifier module in combination with a low noise amplifier circuit that can include a metamaterial matching circuit. The combination of PA and LNA circuits that utilize metamaterials can provide the functionality of a duplexer without including a stand-alone or passive duplexer. Thus, in certain cases, the front-end module can provide duplexer functionality without including a separate duplexer. Advantageously, in certain cases, the size of the front-end module can be reduced by eliminating the passive duplexer. Further, the loss introduced into the signal path by the passive duplexer is eliminated improving the performance of the communication system that includes the active duplexer.

Metamaterial based power amplifier module

Systems, methods, and devices relate to tunable circuits for multimode power amplification. For example, a variable-gain amplification system can include an amplifier configured to provide an amplified signal and to selectively operate in at least a first gain mode and a second gain mode. The variable-gain amplification system can also include a tunable circuit configured to receive the amplified signal from the amplifier and to provide an output signal. The tunable circuit can be configured to implement a first turn ratio for the first gain mode and a second turn ratio for the second gain mode.

Variable-gain amplifiers with configurable baluns

An antenna system operates in a hybrid coplanar waveguide and rectangular waveguide mode. A slot array with a conductive layer is disposed on a substrate and defines a coplanar waveguide joining a number of side slots arranged in a line forming the slot array. Another substrate is spaced apart from the substrate and a ground plane is defined thereon. A defined volume waveguide is disposed between the substrates. The array is configured to radiate a radiation pattern in a hybrid mode that results from a combination of the slot array and the defined volume waveguide. The side slots may be elliptical in shape for side lobe level reduction.

A front-end module of a wireless device can replace a passive duplexer with an active duplexer that uses metamaterial matching circuits. The active duplexer can be formed from a power amplifier circuit and a low noise amplifier circuit that each include a metamaterial matching circuit. The combination of a power amplifier circuit and a low noise amplifier circuit that each utilize metamaterials to form the associated matching circuit can provide the functionality of a duplexer without including the additional circuitry of a stand-alone or passive duplexer. Thus, in certain cases, the front-end module can provide duplexer functionality without including a separate duplexer. Advantageously, in certain cases, the size of the front-end module can be reduced by eliminating the passive duplexer. Further, the loss introduced into the signal path by the passive duplexer is eliminated improving the performance of the communication system that includes the active duplexer.

Active duplexer

A cellular antenna structure for integration in a vehicle includes a ground plane to follow a slope of a spoiler chassis. The spoiler chassis is a portion of the vehicle covered by a spoiler. The cellular antenna structure also includes a cellular antenna orthogonal to the ground plane and electrically connected to the ground plane and a structural support affixed to the ground plane to maintain a fixed position of the cellular antenna orthogonal to the ground plane.

Systems, methods, and devices relate to tunable baluns for multimode power amplification. For example, a variable-gain amplification system can include a power amplifier configured to provide an amplified signal and to selectively operate in at least a first gain mode and a second gain mode. A multi-antenna ground plane structure in a vehicle includes a first ground plane to be electrically connected to a fascia chassis. The fascia chassis is a portion of the vehicle covered by a fascia. A first side of the first ground plane seats two or more antennas. The multi-antenna ground plane structure also includes one or more additional ground planes affixed to a second side, opposite the first side, of the first ground plane. One of the one or more additional ground planes is attached to one or more antennas such that the one or more antennas is oriented opposite an orientation of the two or more antennas seated on the first ground plane.

A vehicle includes a spoiler and an antenna assembly for the vehicle. The spoiler includes a support surface and a cover attachable to the support surface to form a cavity with the support surface. The antenna assembly includes a circuit board, antenna and support beam. The circuit board is attachable to the support surface. The support beam extends from the circuit board and the antenna is at an end of the support beam opposite the circuit board. The antenna is disposed within the cavity.
