A pallet transport system for a textile cheese winding machine includes a cop delivery and storage track for supplying cops to be rewound, an empty tube return track, and a plurality of transport tracks each extending through one winding head of the bobbin winder transversely between the supply and return tracks. The entrance region of each transverse transport track is closable by selectively operable blocking mechanism disposed in operation to permit empty pallets to enter the transverse transport track while pallets equipped with cops are shunted. In this manner, the transverse transport tracks serve as a storage device for empty pallets which provides the advantage that, at the completion of a batch, the time needed by the bobbin winder to properly end the batch is shortened, and hence the machine's efficiency is increased.

A method for forming a yarn reserve on an end surface of a cross-wound bobbin or cheese disposed on a bobbin tube includes predetermining a length of yarn for a yarn reserve. The yarn is unwound to the predetermined length from a cheese while temporarily storing the yarn in a reservoir. The presence of the yarn in the reservoir is detected with a sensor. The unwinding of the yarn is stopped and the rotational direction of the cheese is reversed to the given winding direction after attaining the predetermined length of the yarn. The yarn is then wound onto the one end of the bobbin tube while continuously holding the yarn taut with a restraining force of the reservoir. An apparatus for changing cheeses on a machine that produces cheeses and for forming a yarn reserve on an end surface of a cheese disposed on a bobbin tube includes a drive mechanism for unwinding a predetermined length of a yarn from a cheese. A reservoir receives and stores the yarn from the cheese. A yarn guide positions the yarn in the vicinity of and deposits the yarn on one of the ends of the bobbin tube. At least one sensor is disposed in at least one of the yarn guide and the reservoir for detecting the received yarn. A control device is connected to the at least one sensor for controlling the drive mechanism.

Sliver-processing textile machines and can exchange stations include a can transport carriage to be moved in a given direction of motion for manipulating sliver cans having upper rims with outer peripheries. A can manipulating device is movable on the can transport carriage above the cans in a direction transverse to the given direction of motion for manipulating the sliver cans during an automatic can exchange. Four gripper elements for gripping the sliver cans to be manipulated are disposed at four mutually spaced-apart locations at the outer peripheries of the upper rims of the cans.

Thereafter, the method includes the step of indexing movement of a full sliver can on the transport carriage to position the can for subsequent transfer to the back row position of the spinning station. An apparatus for use in practicing the method includes a can transport carriage having a rotating turntable with a plurality of equally angularly spaced can supports thereon.

An apparatus for transporting full sliver cans to the spinning stations of a textile spinning machine for can exchange operations thereat during which empty sliver cans are exchanged for full sliver cans. The apparatus includes a can transport carriage having three can supports at equal angular spacings from one another relative to a vertical axis and a device for indexing movement of the three can supports to sequentially position each can support at a can transfer location at which a can is transferred between the can transport carriage and the textile spinning machine. Each can support is sequentially indexed to a standby location from the can transfer location and, thereafter, to a ready location from which the can support is indexed into the can transfer location. A can distribution apparatus includes an assembly forming an endless path interconnecting a plurality of distribution locations for support movement of cans to and between distribution locations and an assembly for simultaneously advancing cans of varying degrees of fullness and readiness to a textile machine. The can distribution locations include a textile machine delivery location, a can return location, a full can supply location, and a can receipt location. The advancement of each can is effected simultaneous with the advancement of the other cans in the endless path independent of whether the can is empty, partially loaded or contains a full load and whether the full load is prepared for delivery or not. A detector detects the sliver fullness of each can on the endless path and signals this information to a control device which controls the distribution of cans to the various can distribution locations. A sliver end preparation device prepares full cans for delivery to a textile machine and a detector detects the presence or absence of an end in a preferred position. The control device prevents the distribution of cans having a full load of unprepared sliver to a textile machine in response to a signal from the detector.
