An eddy current power absorption unit has a particular cooling system which alleviates overheating of the unit and its individual components. Cooling conduits comprising a plurality of meandering paths, each including axially oriented flow lines, are disposed close to the heated components to uniformly remove heat therefrom. The flow velocities at the entrance and exit of the meandering flow paths are generally equal to one another.

Method and apparatus for cooling an eddy current powder absorption unit

An eddy current brake has a particular cooling system which alleviates overheating of the brake and its individual components. Cooling conduits comprising a plurality of parallel flow lines are disposed close to the heated components and the arrangement is such that heat is uniformly exchanged and removed from the brake. Cooling medium flows through the conduits along the plurality of flow lines and the distribution of cooling medium is such that the velocity of flow is substantially equal along each line.

Eddy current brake cooling

Test stands for power plants generally include a power absorbing unit for absorbing the power of the plant under test. The allowable measuring speed of the power absorbing unit depends on permissible additional weight on the coupling flange which serves to interconnect the power plant to one end of the power absorbing unit. In order to avoid the detrimental influence of increased amplitudes caused by torsional resonances the weight that exceeds the permissible weight is transferred to the opposite end of the power absorbing unit and the torque of the power plant is introduced in dampened form at that end.

Test stand for power plants and method

A dynamometer is connected to a foundation by two pairs of leaf springs. One end of the leaf springs is firmly connected to the dynamometer and the other ends are connected to the foundation by pivot joints, which absorb rotation, oscillation and axial movement. The pivot joints are advantageously constituted by metal and rubber components.

Cradle mounted dynamometer

A hydraulic eddy brake has a rotor and a stator both forming an eddy chamber. Liquid supply conduits lead to the center of the eddy chamber. The rotor shaft is sealed relative to the housing formed by the stator. The sealing is accomplished by noncontacting sealings. Leakage liquid is discharged to respective chambers located between the bearings and the eddy chamber proper. A gap is provided between the shaft and the housing. This gap is connected with the center of the eddy chamber through a liquid feedback which may include an intermediate chamber and respective liquid feedback conduits whereby the pressure at the point of leakage is minimized. Such brakes are used as absorption dynamometers to measure torque.

Hydraulic eddy brake

A control valve absorption dynamometers has a closed end discharge conduit forming a cylinder with discharge openings in the cylinder walls. A floating piston is movable in the cylinder to vary the area of the discharge openings. A first piston surface is subject to the pressure at the exit port of the dynamometer or to the pressure downstream of a butterfly valve arranged between the piston and the exit port of the dynamometer. A second piston surface which may be smaller than the first piston surface is subject to pressure from the dynamometer exit or from a pump whereby the piston is moved for varying the area of the discharge openings in the cylinder wall. The intake of the pump may be connected to the inlet or exit port of the dynamometer. Flow control means may be located directly next to said exit port in said discharge conduit to convert a turbulent flow into a uni-directional flow.
