The present disclosure relates to a gas generating cell including a housing having a cover, an anode cup and a sealing ring. The housing accommodates at least one anode, a cathode and a separator. The cover accommodates at least the cathode and the separator and, with the sealing ring, forms a preassembled unit to be inserted into the anode cup. The present disclosure also relates to a method of producing a gas generating cell, the gas generating cell including a housing having a cover, an anode cup, a sealing ring, and at least one anode, a cathode and a separator. The method steps include: placing at least the cathode and separator into the cover, thereby creating a preassembled unit; and, inserting the preassembled unit and a sealing ring into the anode cup.

Gas generating cell or battery and method of producing same

Discrete locations of an electrode web or electrode segment based on a porous metallic carrier framework, which are intended to receive the take-off conductor, are briefly heated to about 450.degree. C. and then cleared of active mass with compressed air. The heating, for which a stream of hot air is particularly suitable, has the effect of destroying the organic binder present in the active material. Following such treatment, a clean metal surface is made available for the welded attachment of the take-off conductor, of a size which is limited to the precise dimensions necessary for the connection.

Process for preparing the porous metallic framework of an electrode

Viscous active ingredients are introduced into the case of a galvanic cell by extrusion from a nozzle fed with the ingredients by a pumping device. The pumping device includes an elastic, substantially straight piece of hose, and a pressure roll which can be moved along the hose between two established limits, both in the general direction of the outlet nozzle to compress the hose, and in the opposite direction to assume a retracted position along the hose. The piece of hose is compressed at a point immediately adjacent to the hose segment defined between the established limits of the pressure roll so that the material to be metered does not come into contact with parts in relative motion to each other.

Positive ribbon electrodes for primary and secondary cells are produced in a dry process wherein two strips of active material in powder form, preferably comprised of MnO.sub.2, FeS.sub.2, CuO, .alpha.-Cu.sub.2 V.sub.2 O.sub.7, and Li.sub.x MnO.sub.y, are simultaneously rolled and then fed into the gap of a roller mechanism, on opposite sides of an interposed metal net or mesh, to roll coat both sides of the lattice-like carrier strip. After excess mass is stripped off, the finished electrode ribbon has a thickness of less than 0.45 mm and a porosity of more than 24% which, because of its large active surface, is advantageously used in wound batteries incorporating Li or H.sub.2 electrodes.

A spiral-wound galvanic cell is based upon a lithium system with a nonaqueous electrolyte, and includes a positive electrode, the carrier of which is clamped within the slit of a simple metal splint which serves as the winding mandrel and current collector. Contact with the metal splint is established by a leaf spring associated with the housing cover, which then serves as the positive terminal post for the cell. A high specific contact pressure is developed at this connection by providing the leaf spring with a punched hole which rests on thicker top portions of the metal splint. A small metal plate pressed through the lithium electrode and its separator establishes electrical contact between the lithium electrode and the interior wall of the housing vessel, which then serves as the negative cell pole.

Spiral-wound galvanic cell

A process which comprises thermally decomposing in an electrically heated vibrating helical conveyor, manganese carbonate (MnCO.sub.3 x H.sub.2 O) into a manganese oxide (predominantly of Mn.sub.2 O.sub.3 x Mn.sub.5 O.sub.8) catalyst at about 500.degree. C., and processing this catalyst into a highly active electrode paste by dry intensive mixing with a carbon-containing conductive material (carbon black, graphite or activated carbon) and PTFE as the binder. The resulting electrode paste can be rolled into a supporting net made from Ni or Ag. Also a two-step mixing process in which the catalyst powder is first premixed with small amounts of a conductive agent and a binder, compacted and granulated, and then combined with the larger residual amount of the intended amounts of conductive agent and binder in a second mixing step. The finished gas diffusion electrode has a biporous structure consisting of hydrophilic and hydrophobic pore canals, which is highly favorable for the transport processes and the electrochemical reaction. The electrode is useful in fuel cells, alkali chloride electrolyzers and air cells.

Plastic-bound gas diffusion electrode containing a manganese oxide

In an air/oxygen button cell the multilayer air electrode is reliably held in place between an inwardly extending rib which is formed in the bottom of the cathode cup and a sealing base which is associated with the cup forming the negative electrode. The sealing base acts like a domed spring under tension because of a sloping portion provided in its bottom in the region above the rib. The air electrode remains flat and is secure against lateral displacements.

In the continuous manufacture of plastic-cohered gas diffusion electrodes, and particularly air electrodes, in the form of thin foils, a dry mixture of PTFE and active carbon powder is subjected, during the mixing process in a paddle mixer, to the additional intensive influence of rapidly rotating cutting knives. The degree of subdivision and homogeneity of the dry mixture is thereby enhanced to such a degree that, in the finished electrode tape, the mass does not exhibit nonuniform thickening.

Continuous production of gas diffusion electrodes

A closure for a galvanic element, and particularly a cylindrical cell, is formed in substance of a cap-like or toroidal, resilient member, whose upstanding outer rim is segmented by slits into distinct flaps. These are therefore capable of acting resiliently in a radial direction and are capable of maintaining in the sealing region a steady sealing pressure between the cup and a plastic closure member. During closing of the cell through crimping, the flaps are supported from inside by a crimper support sleeve. In this way, the plastic of the closure body is plasticized during movement of the crimping tool toward the die.

An electrode tape is made by uniting a polytetrafluorethylene foil and a catalyst layer between compression rollers, after having moistened the foil with a wetting, easily volatilizable liquid.

The positive electrode consisting of the chalcogenide of an at least bi-valent metal is connected to the positive current take-off solely through an electrically conductive connector having an exceptionally small contact area with the higher valent metal.

Perforted plastic half shells enclose series of components, each including a conductive foil, a take-off conductor, the positive pressed carbon electrode, and separator. Between these components there is the negative zinc plate electrode, which is framed in plastic. The half shells have electrolyte access passages and connector lead-throughs.

Air/zinc flat cell

The positive electrode for an air/zinc element is a depolarizer mass attached to a perforated plastic carrier with interposition of a conductive foil and a metal foil take-off conductor, both also perforated. The perforations in the plastic carrier are in the form of hollow rivets extending toward the foils, the foils are engaged by their own perforations concentrically upon said rivets, and the rivets have outwardly protruding collars extending over the foils, whereby the foils are attached and all perforations are aligned.

Positive electrode for air/zinc elements
