Nonaqueous polymer dispersions are obtainable by polymerization of esters (A) of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid and/or ethylacrylic acid with C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 -alcohols in an organic solvent or a mixture of organic solvents in which the polymers formed are insoluble, and in the presence of copolymers (B) having a molecular weight of from 500 to 20,000 and obtainable by bulk or solution polymerization of monoolefinically unsaturated monomers at from 180.degree. to 400.degree. C. and from 1 to 200 bar, and the said dispersions are used for the production of finishes, coating materials and adhesives.

Crosslinkable polymeric compositions which are dissolved or dispersed in an organic solvent, a process for their preparation and their use. These polymeric compositions which undergo crosslinking at room temperature or elevated temperatures after drying are obtained by reacting polymeric organic compounds containing carbonyl groups with polyhydrazides in the presence of monoketones or monoaldehydes. A process for the production of coatings based on reaction products of (A) polyhydroxy polyacrylate resins obtained from hydroxyalkyl esters of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid, alkyl acrylates and/or methacrylates, one or more polymerizable, olefinically unsaturated N-containing heterocyclic compounds and if appropriate vinyl-aromatics, acrylamides or methacrylamides and other monomers with (B) isocyanurate-containing polyisocyanates having a functionality of from 2.5 to 6 and predominantly containing cycloaliphatically bonded isocyanate groups is particularly useful for coating metal articles.

Baking finishes having a high solids content contain, as the binder, a copolymer of one or more mono-acrylate or monomethacrylate of an alkanediol, an ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid whose homopolymer has a glass transition temperature of below -40.degree. C., an ester of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid whose homopolymer has a glass transition temperature of above 35.degree. C. and acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, which copolymer has a Fikentscher K value of from 13 to 17 and may or may not be used in combination with conventional aminoplast precondensates having a crosslinking action. These baking finishes are particularly useful as binders for automotive finishes.

High solids baking finishes

The invention relates to baking finishes of low solvent content, consisting essentially of an acrylate resin, an eposy resin and a mixture of organic solvents, with or without pigment, catalyst and other conventional auxiliaries, in which the acrylate resin is a copolymer which contains from 10 to 35% by weight of .alpha.,.beta.-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids as copolymerized units, has a very low K value and has an acid number of from 70 to 250 mg of KOH/g, the epoxy resin contains at least 2 oxirane groups per molecule and the mixture of organic solvents is a mixture of from 20 to 80% by weight of a solvent having a boiling point of from 100.degree. to 280.degree. C. and a dielectric constant of from 2 to 4.99, and from 80 to 20% by weight of a solvent having a boiling point of from 80.degree. to 200.degree. C. and a dielectric constant of from 5 to 27. The weight ratio of acrylate resin to epoxy resin is from 9:1 to 6:4. The acrylate resin has a mean molecular weight Mn of from 1500 to 3000 and an inhomogeneity (Mw/Mn), measured by gel permeation chromatography, of from 1.5 to 2.0. These baking finishes of low solvent content may be used, e.g., as finishes for domestic equipment and as automotive primers.

The invention relates to baking finishes of low solvent content, consisting essentially of an acrylate resin, an epoxy resin and a mixture of organic solvents, with or without pigment, catalyst and other conventional auxiliaries, in which the acrylate resin is a copolymer which contains from 10 to 35% by weight of .alpha.,.beta.-olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids as copolymerized units, has a very low K value and has an acid number of from 70 to 250 mg of KOH/g, the epoxy resin contains at least 2 oxirane groups per molecule and the mixture of organic solvents is a mixture of from 20 to 80% by weight of a solvent having a boiling point of from 100.degree. to 280.degree. C and a dielectric constant of from 2 to 4.99, and from 80 to 20% by weight of a solvent having a boiling point of from 80.degree. to 200.degree. C and a dielectric constant of from 5 to 27. The weight ratio of acrylate resin to epoxy resin is from 9:1 to 6:4. These baking finishes of low solvent content may be used, e.g., as finished for domestic equipment and as automotive primers.

Baking finishes of low solvent content, which have a viscosity of from 20 to 300 DIN seconds, measured in a DIN cup No. 4, and comprise from 40 to 85% by weight of hydroxyl-containing polymers, from 10 to 55% by weight of amine/formaldehyde resins and from 5 to 35% by weight of polyisocyanates, and may also contain up to 15% by weight of monohydric or dihydric alcohols, up to 35% by weight of solvents, up to 65% by weight of pigments and fillers and up to 3% by weight of crosslinking catalysts. The finishes are particularly suitable for coating automotive components.
