The apparatus for support of a roll in a rolling mill comprises a single supporting member having a longitudinally-extending elliptically-cross sectioned shell-like cavity extending over the entire length of the roll and engaging the roll so it rests in the shell-like cavity and a plurality of crescent-shaped plastic blocking pieces spaced from each other transversely along the supporting member in the shell-like cavity to divide it into a plurality of pressurized chambers to which a plurality of pressurized medium lines are connected. Each of the blocking pieces are provided with a plurality of openings for a lubricant and can be provided with compression springs to urge the blocking piece toward the roll.

Apparatus for hydrostatic bracing of a roll in a rolling mill

An apparatus is provided for removing scale from a hot rolled steel strip by rolls acting by grinding and/or milling so that these rolls are uniformly effective in all regions of the steel strip and an appropriate uniform removal of the scale layer occurs. This is attained when driven grinding rolls adjustable toward the surfaces of the steel strip are provided of which at least two opposing rolls are axially slidable in opposite directions and have inversely oriented S-shape contours. These contours complement each other completely flawlessly in one definite position of the grinding rolls. In one such position the rolls provide a uniform engagement on both sides of a steel strip with a nearly rectangular profile. In fact the rolls by appropriate axial sliding and application of bending forces if necessary may be adjusted to fit the actual profile of the steel strip so that a uniform engagement on the scale layer is guaranteed and a locally excessive grinding and/or milling in the central region of the steel strip is avoided.

Apparatus for removal of scale from hot-rolled steel strip

The rolling mill comprises a plurality of working rolls and supporting rolls or a plurality of working rolls, intermediate rolls and supporting rolls. The intermediate rolls with their mounts and the slender working rolls ussed with them in six-high operation are exchangeable with or replaceable by larger thicker working rolls for two-high operation. No contact can occur between the body of a working roll and the body of the adjacent supporting roll during use as a two-high mill. In two-high operation the mount of a working roll is provided with a spacer piece engaging against the mounting member of the adjacent supporting roll. The mounts of the thicker working rolls used in two-high operation can be fitted into the guide pieces which act as guides for the mounting pieces of the intermediate rolls when the rolling mill is used as a six-high mill.

Multipurpose rolling mill

The rolling mill for mechanical descaling of hot rolled steel is constructed according to the slidable roll process with reducing rolls so that a unform operation with different and/or changing shape steel strips can obtained. This is attained when the rolling mill has at least two rolls slidable in opposite directions whose body surfaces are constructed with S-shape contours positioned inversely to each other so that these contours compliment each other flawlessly in one certain axial relative position. When sliding the rolls in opposite directions in one case the contour is decreased in the center region of the steel strip and when slid in the opposite directions in the other case the contour is increased in the center region. Thus the rolls can be adjusted to fit a gently convex steel strip profile by axially sliding the rolls in opposite directions as also rolled strips with a thickness centrally reduced in comparison to that of the edge regions can by appropriate sliding of the rolls opposite each other.

Steel strip descaler

A six-high rolling stand has a pair of upper and lower working rolls defining a nip, a pair of upper and lower inner backup rolls vertically flanking and bearing on the working rolls, a pair of upper and lower outer backup rolls vertically flanking and bearing on the inner backup rolls, a frame, and respective journal blocks carrying the rolls in the frame and supporting the rolls therein for rotation about respective axes that are all substantially parallel with the outer roll axes at least defining a vertical plane. A drive is connected directly to the outer backup rolls for oppositely rotating same and the upper and lower rolls vertically engage one another so that the rotation of the outer backup rolls is transmitted through the inner backup rolls to the working rolls. Actuators braced between some of the journal blocks and the frame for vertically displacing at least some of the rolls horizontally perpendicular to the plane. These actuators are braced between the journal blocks of the inner backup rolls and the frame for displacing the inner rolls and the respective axes horizontally perpendicular to the plane to a position offset horizontally therefrom.

Six-high roll stand with offset inner backup rolls

A rolling stand has a support frame, a pair of small-diameter working rolls defining a workpiece nip open perpendicular to the plane and rotatable about respective horizontal, parallel, and vertically spaced axes. A pair of large-diameter backup rolls are rotatable about respective axes parallel to and vertically flanking the working-roll axes. These backup-roll axes define a vertical plane offset from the working-roll plane. In addition each backup roll bears vertically on the respective working roll and a drive counterrotates the rolls of each roll pair to draw an elongated workpiece of predetermined maximum width generally perpendicular to the planes through the nip. The working rolls are longer than the maximum workpiece width and have end portions projecting axially beyond the workpiece. The rolls are pressed vertically toward the nip to compress and deform the workpiece thereat. Respective pushing elements engage horizontally generally perpendicular to the planes against the end portions of the working rolls and respective actuators push these elements horizontally generally perpendicular to the planes against the end portions of the working rolls.

Roll stand with braced and offset working rolls

A roll stand has a frame in which upper and lower working rolls are journaled for rotation about respective parallel upper and lower working-roll axes and defining a workpiece nip. Respective upper and lower backup-roll guide elements vertically flank the working rolls and are each at least partially vertically displaceable relative to the frame. Respective upper and lower backup-roll journal blocks are axially displaceable but vertically fixed relative to the guide elements and define parallel upper and lower inner axes flanking the working axes. Respective inner backup rolls are journaled in the blocks for rotation about the inner axes and bear radially toward the nip on the working rolls. The inner backup rolls are therefore axially displaceable in the guide elements. A pair of outer backup rolls are journaled in the frame for rotation about outer axes coplanar with the respective inner axes and bear radially toward the nip on the inner backup rolls. Respective vertically effective actuators for exerting a force at least generally parallel to the planes between each journal block and the frame to bend the inner backup rolls and for displacing the force axially relative to the journal blocks.

Six-high rolling stand

A roll stand has a frame and a pair of small-diameter and substantially parallel working rolls defining a workpiece nip. Thus a strip to be rolled passes in a horizontal upstream-to-downstream direction through the nip. Respective pairs of upper and lower upstream support levers have outer ends pivoted on the frame and inner ends downstream therefrom and respective pairs of upper and lower downstream support levers have outer ends pivoted on the frame downstream of the nip and inner ends pivoted on the inner ends of the upstream levers. Respective pairs of journal blocks mounted on the inner ends of the levers support the working rolls for rotation about substantially parallel axes flanking the nip. A pair of large-diameter and substantially parallel backup rolls flank and bear toward the nip on the working rolls and are rotatable in the frame about substantially parallel axes flanking the working-roll axes and offset therefrom in the direction. Respective upstream and downstream vertically expansible actuators are braced between the upstream and downstream levers between the respective inner and outer ends thereof for vertically bending the working rolls.

Four-high roll stand with offset working rolls

A roll stand has a frame having two sides spaced apart transversely of a workpiece travel direction and formed with throughgoing windows and a pair of vertically spaced traverses extending between the frame sides. Two outer backup rolls centered on parallel axes transverse to the direction having journal blocks vertically displaceable and guided in the windows of the frame sides. Upper and lower guide elements vertically displaceable in the windows between the outer-roll blocks carry the journal blocks of two inner backup rolls. Pairs of positioning actuators in the windows vertically between the inner-roll blocks carry supports which carry second upper and lower guide elements vertically displaceable on the supports. The positioning actuators are expansible and contractile to displace the second guide elements in the direction. Two working rolls between and parallel to the other roll axes each have two journal blocks fitted to and axially slidable in the second guide elements. An insert carried in the traverses carries rows of bracing rollers which extend axially along the working rolls between same and the traverses. The insert, bracing rollers, and upstream positioning actuators form an integral bracing unit and at least one of the windows is shaped such that the bracing unit can be withdrawn axially through the frame side. Rows of bracing actuators braced in the direction between the rollers and the traverses can press the rollers opposite to the direction against the working rolls.

A roll stand has a frame in which upper and lower working rolls are journaled for rotation about respective parallel upper and lower working-roll axes and defining a workpiece nip. Respective upper and lower backup-roll guide elements vertically flank the working rolls and are each at least partially vertically displaceable relative to the frame. Respective vertically effective actuators exert a force at least generally parallel to the planes between each journal block and the frame to bend the inner backup rolls and for displacing the force axially relative to the journal blocks.

A changing apparatus for a standard six-high rolling stand comprises a changing carriage having a pair of similar full-set holders each provided with two vertically spaced working-roll supports and two vertically spaced backup-roll supports flanking the respective working-roll supports. These supports are vertically spaced like the respective rolls in the stand. Thus a full set of two working and two backup rolls can be held in either of the holders. The changing carriage can be displaced between upstream and downstream positions to axially align with the rolls in the stand. A loading carriage has a working-roll holder with two vertically spaced working-roll supports and a backup-roll holder with two vertically spaced backup-roll supports, the carriage being displaceable into a position with the working-roll supports of the working-roll holder aligned with the working-roll supports of one of the full-set holders and a position with the backup-roll supports of the backup-roll holder aligned with the backup-roll supports of the one full-set holder. The rolls can be axially shifted from the loading carriage holders into the one full-set holder, rolls are then axially shifted from the stand into the other full-set holder, and rolls in the one full-set holder are shifted into the roll stand.

Changing rolls in six-high roll stand

In a four-high rolling mill stand where the work rolls are offset from the perpendicular axial plane of the back-up rolls, they are supported on one side by intermediate rolls and support rollers, and on the other side by hydraulic piston/cylinder units. The work roll bearings are attached to the piston/cylinder units through a sliding guide arrangement, so that they can be slid up and down, from side to side, and the work rolls can also be moved towards and away from the roll gap by actuation of the piston/cylinder units.
