An impregnated flat gasket useful as a cylinder head gasket for an internal-combustion engine, includes a fiber mat comprised of from about 2 to about 20 weight percent of a synthetic organic fiber; from about 10 to about 70 weight percent of a first inorganic filler which has a grain size having a maximum of 0.01 mm and which has a specific surface area having a maximum of 30 m.sup.2 /g; from about 10 to about 70 weight percent of a second inorganic filler which is composed of particles having a shape which is one of needle-shaped and globular, which has a grain size having a maximum of 0.01 mm and which has a specific surface area ranging from 50 to 350 m.sup.2 /g; from about 0.5 to about 1 weight percent of zinc oxide; and from about 3 to about 10 weight percent of a nitrile butadiene latex. The impregnated fiber mat material can be punched into gasket blanks without problems.

Impregnated flat gasket and method of producing the gasket

Soft material flat gasket useful as an exhaust flange gasket, a cylinder head gasket or a secondary gasket for internal-combustion engines includes a porous soft material and a crosslinked impregnating agent included in the porous soft material. The crosslinked impregnating agent is comprised of a silicone resin and is the crosslinked product of at least one liquid polysiloxane having reactive hydrogen groups. Crosslinking of the at least one liquid polysiloxane proceeds in the presence of an effective amount of a catalyst, which catalyst is introduced into the porous soft material prior to introduction therein of the at least one liquid polysiloxane according to the inventive method of manufacture. Introduction of catalyst prior to polysiloxane impregnation results in the catalyst being finely distributed throughout the soft material so that subsequent crosslinking of the impregnating agent results in products that are saturated to such a degree that the impregnating agents crosslink substantially in the surface regions and the finished gaskets no longer stick to packaging material used in storage, shipping and handling, or cling to sealing faces of, for example, internal-combustion engines, after installation.

Soft material gasket and method of manufacture

A flat sealing gasket includes an opening defined by a gasket edge and a sheet metal armor framing the gasket edge. The armor at least partially encloses an annular space which is situated radially inwardly of the gasket edge and is generally concentric with the gasket opening. Further, a graphite filling is accommodated in the annular space.

A soft substance gasket material preferably made of a metal reinforced fiber mat is impregnated with a silicone impregnating agent comprising a mixture of a polysiloxane having reactive hydrogen groups such as a polyhydrogen siloxane, an addition cross-linking polysiloxane such as a methyl vinyl siloxane, and cross-linking catalysts, preferably in the form of only one organic metal compound. In spite of having small quantities of addition cross-linking polysiloxane and cross-linking catalysts, the impregnated seals are not tacky after cross-linking, they are easy and inexpensive to manufacture, and they evidence improved functional characteristics such as improved resistance to hot media, temperature and aging when compared with seals impregnated with only one type of polysiloxane.

An impregnated, soft, flat sealing gasket and a method of manufacturing same which includes the steps of impregnating a fiber mat with a liquid, cross-linkable silicone impregnating agent which includes a cross-linking agent which forms radicals under the influence of heat; heating the silicone-impregnated fiber mat to cause at least partial cross-linking of the silicone impregnating agent; and irradiating the impregnated fiber mat with high energy radiation to cause cross-linking of the silicone impregnating agent present therein, whereby the silicone impregnating agent present in surface regions of the flat sealing gasket is cross-linked to a greater degree than obtainable by thermal treatment alone.

A soft material, flat gasket having a release coating adhered thereto prepared by a process which includes: perparing a release coating composition which is a suspension including: from 69.5 to 93 parts by weight of an oil having a viscosity in excess of 100 m Pa.times.s and a fire point in excess of 230.degree. C., which oil is one of a mineral oil, a nonreactive silicone oil, and a mixture thereof; from 5 to 20 parts by weight of a polytetrafluoroethylene powder which has a particle size of less than 5.mu.; from 0.5 to 10 parts by weight of an aqueous latex; and from 0.5 to 2 parts by weight of a wetting agent; and applying the release coating composition by coating at least a predetermined portion of at least one surface of the soft material, flat gasket therewith. In spite of the notoriously poor bonding capability of PTFE materials, the release coatings produced in this manner exhibit unexpectedly good adhesion to the gasket so that the gaskets do not release PTFE and give off their color when handled, do not loose their non-stick properties when stored over long periods of time, and can be stacked harmlessly on top of one another immediately after application of the coating.

A method of making a flat gasket comprising a non-woven mat having opposite faces, including the steps of impregnating the mat with a polymerizable liquid impregnating agent and applying to at least one part of at least one mat face a coating containing a polymerizable polymer material. The coating is applied to the impregnated mat prior to polymerization of the impregnating agent. The impregnating agent and the coating are simultaneously polymerized in one operation.
