Skin-protecting ointment compositions are disclosed that include a greasy material, a safe and minimally absorbed solid, and optionally, a phospholipid composition, and that exhibit reduced greasiness and tackiness relative to an otherwise identical composition lacking the safe and minimally absorbed solid and the optional phospholipid composition. Also disclosed are methods of making such skin-protecting ointment compositions. In one embodiment, the skin-protecting ointment composition comprises a safe and minimally absorbed solid, a lipid thickener, an ointment-like material, a volatile oil, and optionally a phospholipid composition. In another embodiment, the method of making the skin-protecting ointment composition comprises combining a greasy material and a safe and minimally absorbed solid, mixing the greasy material and the safe and minimally absorbed solid, optionally adding a phospholipid composition dissolved in a volatile oil, and cooling the combined composition to impede oxidation of the phospholipid composition.

Reducing tackiness and greasiness of petrolatum-like materials

Active ingredients are solubilized or dispersed in a matrix which also contains dispersants. When this composition is applied to a permeable substrate, the matrix and dispersants associate with the substrate and bring the active ingredient into contact with the substrate while substantially preventing penetration of the active ingredient into the permeable substrate. The consistent and continuous contact of the active ingredient with the permeable substrate, needed to achieve optimal and reliable effectiveness of the active ingredient, is enhanced by the low water solubility of the composition and by its resistance to removal by rubbing. The composition is, however, easily removable by surface active agents, such as soaps and detergents.

Intersorption composition and method

High molecular weight petroleum fractions which have a low white oil content are admixed with a volatile siloxane, hexamethyldisiloxane, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane and/or decamethylcyclopentasiloxane and a compound that is both hydrophobic and hydrophilic to provide an ointment base which enables these petrolatum fractions to be spread easily on the skin. Evaporation of the solvent leaves a high molecular weight petrolatum film on the skin that is nonirritating and yet highly resistant to mechanical removal.
