A terrain-awareness system (TAS) provides LOOK-AHEAD/LOOK-DOWN as well as LOOK-UP terrain advisory and warning indications to the pilot of an aircraft of a hazardous flight condition. The TAS includes an airport data base as well as a terrain data base that is structured to provide various resolutions depending on the topography of the particular geographic area of interest. Navigational data from a satellite-based navigational system, such as a global positioning system (GPS), is used to provide a LOOK-AHEAD/LOOK-DOWN and LOOK-UP terrain advisory and terrain warning indications based upon the current position and projected flight path of the aircraft. Since the terrain advisory and the warning signals are a function of the flight path of the aircraft, nuisance warnings are minimized.

Terrain awareness system

In order to provide the pilots with a display or a map of the terrain below the aircraft, a display is generated on a cockpit display, such as a weather radar, of the contours of the terrain below the aircraft. The terrain contour display is generated from aircraft position information, a terrain data base, and a terrain awareness envelope defined by awareness boundaries. Terrain contours are depicted with the highest terrain within the envelope colored red, high intermediate terrain contours in yellow with varying dot densities, low intermediate terrain contours in green with varying dot densities, and the lowest terrain in black. The green contours can be overwritten with a low density yellow based on a pre-caution envelope which extends certain of the awareness boundaries to provide notice to a pilot of upcoming cautions.

Methods and apparatus for determining altitude, specifically altitude in an aircraft, and an estimated error of the altitude. The altitude determination preferably uses a first altitude based on hydrostatic calculations, including local pressure and temperature, as well as a second altitude which is preferably a GPS altitude. A radio altimetry can also be used instead of or to complement the GPS altitude. Other sources of altitude determination can be used in the equation for the calculation of the final altitude. Each of the sources of altitude determination is provided with a complementary estimated error. In the final determination of the probable altitude, each source of altitude information is preferably accorded a weighting according to the estimated error of the altitude source. For global positioning altitude, the final combination of the altitude sources uses a complementary filter which takes into account the selective availability of the GPS altitude. This accounts for the long-term accuracy but short-term inaccuracy of GPS altitude. Corrections are provided to account for horizontal changes in pressure gradient as the aircraft moves from an origin to a destination. The invention further provides for the altitude to be corrected based on non-standard atmospheric temperature (ISA) variations. The apparatus includes a computer processor and memory configured to receive the altitude information and make the necessary calculations to result in an estimate of the current altitude which is then displayed on an output display. A system for correcting errors in static pressure, airspeed or airspeed rate caused by maneuvering that causes variations in static air pressure measurements compares a barometrically derived vertical velocity or altitude signal with an inertially-derived vertical velocity or altitude signal to provide a correction signal that is representative of changes in static air pressure and is used to correct the static pressure, airspeed or airspeed rate signal.

Performance of an aircraft ground proximity warning system can be improved, especially where the performance of the aircraft itself has been degraded by a factor such as wind shear, by extending Mode 1 and Mode 3 warning envelopes down to within five feet of the ground. Additional improvements in warnings can be made by monitoring flight path angle, stall margin, angle of attack and deceleration profile, when the aircraft is close to the ground.

A ground proximity warning system for aircraft having flight path angle based warning criteria generates a warning in the event of an excessively steep flight path angle during an approach to a landing. The warning criteria are altered to provide an earlier warning upon the occurrence of a low intensity wind shear or a below glideslope condition. A below glideslope warning system that is biased as a function of decreasing performance shear is also provided. A descent rate based warning system usable above a predetermined altitude may also be provided to supplement the flight path angle warning system.

Warning system having low intensity wind shear enhancements

A wind shear detection system compares air-speed with a composite signal derived from signals representative of longitudinal acceleration, normal acceleration, angle of attack and flight path angle to generate a shear signal. An enhanced version of the system is also compensated for roll angle, radio altitude and flap position. In a modified system, the accelerations are calculated along the velocity vector of the aircraft rather than along the horizontal axis to compensate for inaccuracies that could occur under extreme flight conditions such as high bank angle turns and dynamic maneuvers.

An aircraft performance instrument which provides a first indicator which represents the line of level flight of the aircraft and a second indicator representative of the maximum permissible angle of attack of the aircraft.

Wind shear detector head-up display system

A wind shear detection and alerting system (30) compares inertially derived accelerations with air speed rate to provide a wind shear warning signal. Inertially derived accelerations are used instead of purely inertial accelerations because purely inertial systems generally require a vertical gyro. By utilizing angle of attack (.alpha.) and flight path angle (.gamma.) instead of pitch angle (.theta.) in the calculation, no vertical gyro signal is required and the system will be responsive to vertical as well as horizontal shear conditions. An enhanced version of the system is also compensated for roll angle (.phi.), with the roll angle being derived from the rate of change of heading (.PSI.) to avoid the need for a vertical gyro. The alerting system is capable of providing visual and aural warnings for a variety of wind shear conditions, such as, head shear, tail shear, head shear followed by tail shear and wind shear trend. The waring system is also capable of providing a wind shear warning which is a function of the radio altitude of the aircraft.

An independent test sight is described for a pilot's head-up display (HUD). In one embodiment, the independent test site comprises a collimator assembly and an aligned periscope assembly. The collimator assembly comprises a source of light, a reticle, and a lens for projecting the image of the reticle. The periscope assembly comprises a rhomboid prism housed within the chassis of the HUD in such a manner that it can be pivoted from a stowed position to an erect position where it projects a reticle pattern in the field of view of the HUD combiner.
