A method of preparing a hydroxy-functional polyether comprising contacting (a) a hydroxy-functional polyether containing less than or equal to about 200 ppm of a Group IA or Group IIA metal ion, and (b) an acid. Preferably the contact is carried out under reaction conditions such that a salt, which is not suitable to significantly promote trimerization reactions if the hydroxy-functional polyether is reacted with an isocyanate compound, is formed. The amount of acid is sufficient to essentially neutralize residual basic catalyst without requiring additional solids removal steps prior to use of the hydroxy-functional polyether in various applications, such as production of polyurethanes and related products, in which enhanced trimerization may not be desirable. Additional acid may also be added to convert propenyl ether units present in the polyether's backbone to propionaldehyde and the corresponding diol.

Hydroxy-functional polyether finishing process

The concentration of propenyl ethers in a hydroxy-functional polyether having oxypropylene units is reduced by a process including the step of contacting the polyether with an acid ion exchange resin for a time and at a temperature sufficient for the conversion of at least some of the propenyl ethers to propionaldehyde and in the presence of sufficient water for the conversion. Optionally, the polyether is treated with an epoxy compound in an amount sufficient to reduce the acidity of the polyol.

Cycloaliphatic acrylate compositions

Halogenated dicyclopentyl ethers or thioethers of alkylene glycol mono(meth) acrylate or mono (meth) propionates are prepared. The dihalo compounds having (meth) acrylic functionality are useful to prepare thermosetting or thermoplastic resins with built in fire retardency. The tetrahalo compounds are useful fire retardant additives in the manufacture of polymeric foams.

Halogenated (meth) acrylate compounds

Cohalogenation of unsaturated polyesters containing pendant unsaturation and a dicyclopentadienyl ester of an .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated carboxylic acid is carried out at room temperature or lower to simultaneously and selectively halogenate the non .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturation. The hydrolysis of carbon oxysulfide in a gas or liquid stream is catalyzed by morpholines and piperazines at a temperature in the range from about 50.degree. about 90.degree. C. The process can be used in the treatment of refinery gases, coal gasification streams, and other such gases as well as liquid hydrocarbons which contain COS and other acidic contaminants.

The brominated compositions are useful to make copolymers which find use as metal coatings, laminates, ultraviolet light curable coatings and the like.

Brominated cycloaliphatic (meth) acrylate compositions

Chlorinated cycloaliphatic (meth) acrylate compositions are prepared by the reaction of chlorine at a temperature in the range from -30.degree. C. to 50.degree. C. with compositions made by reacting (meth) acrylic acid with crude dicyclopentadiene in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst such as BF.sub.3. The chlorinated compositions have a pleasant fruity odor and are useful to make homopolymers or copolymers which find use as metal coatings, inks, ultraviolet light curable coatings and the like.

A catalyst for, and method of, producing a reaction product predominantly of maleic anhydride, that is a product of reaction containing a ratio of maleic to citraconic anhydrides of at least 25 to 1, respectively, and preferably greater than about 100 to 1, respectively, by reacting a feed stream consisting of oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas and an organic C.sub.5 feed predominantly of piperylene and dicyclopentadiene, and preferably predominantly dicyclopentadiene, at bath temperatures of from about 360.degree. to about 450.degree. C. over a catalyst comprising a mixture of 25 to 60 weight percent titanium oxide (TiO.sub.2), 5 to 40 weight percent molybdenum oxide (MoO.sub.3) and 30 to 60 weight percent vanadium oxide (V.sub.2 O.sub.5) on an alpha alumina or alumina-silica carrier having less than about one square meter per gram (&lt;1 m.sup.2 /g) surface area. The feed rate of the reactants is preferably between about 1,500 and about 15,000 gas hourly space velocity; the C.sub.5 hydrocarbon content of the feed gases being between about 0.5 and 1.8 volume percent.

Method of producing maleic anhydride

A catalyst for, and method of, producing a reaction product predominantly of maleic anhydride, that is a product of reaction containing a ratio of maleic to citraconic anhydrides of at least 25 to 1, respectively, and preferably greater than about 100 to 1, respectively, by reacting a feed stream consisting of oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas and an organic C.sub.5 feed predominantly of piperylene and dicyclopentadiene, and preferably predominantly dicyclopentadiene, at bath temperatures of from about 360.degree. to about 450.degree. C. over a catalyst comprising a mixture of 25 to 60 weight percent titanium oxide (TiO.sub.2), 5 to 40 weight percent molybdenum oxide (MoO.sub.3) and 30 to 60 weight percent vanadium oxide (V.sub.2 O.sub.5) on an alpha alumina or alumina-silica carrier having less than about one square meter per gram (&lt;1 m.sup.2 /g) surface area.
