A method of brake steering in a four-wheel drive utility vehicle having a driven front axle carrying at least two front wheels, a driven rear axle carrying at least two rear wheels, a powertrain delivering torque to the front and rear axles via a connecting shaft, independently operable service brakes on each of the front and rear wheels, and independently operable parking brakes on each of the rear wheels. The method includes, on the vehicle entering a turn, applying the service brakes of the front and rear wheels on the inside of the turn and applying also, and to a controllably varied level of braking force, the parking brake on the rear wheel on the inside of the turn.

Utility vehicle braking

A vehicle brake circuit including a brake actuator, a manually operable valve, an electrically operable valve and a fluid reservoir for the supply of fluid to the actuator. The manually operated valve may be connected to the fluid reservoir either directly or indirectly through the electrically operable valve, when its position blocks a direct fluid connection with the fluid reservoir. The electrically operated valve controls activation or deactivation of the actuator except when the mechanically operated valve is in an unblocked position and overrides the electrically operated valves control of the actuator.

Parking brake

A brake arrangement for a vehicle having a cardan brake and separate left and right brakes. The left brake activated by movement of a first lever and the right brake is activated by movement of a second lever. The left brake, right brake and the cardan brake are activated together by movement of both levers together, characterized in that the cardan brake is connected to a fluid supply in a circuit which comprises a first and a second brake valve arranged in series and the first brake valve is operable by the first lever and the second brake valve is operable by the second lever.

Brake arrangement

A tire inflation feed arrangement for a tire supported on a wheel carried by a wheel rim rotatably mounted via a wheel hub on an axially outer end of an axle housing. The feed arrangement has an annular support body surrounding the outer end of the axle housing, and three concentric annular seals extending around an axially outwardly facing surface on the support body to seal two concentric annular chambers formed in the axially outwardly facing surface between the seals. A first of these annular chambers is connectable with pressurized air to inflate the associated tire and the second annular chamber is connectable with pressurized air to operate a valve mounted on the wheel for admitting air into the tire from the first annular chamber or exhausting air from the tire. The annular seals are each mounted in a respective annular groove in the axially facing surface and each groove is also connectable with a source of pressurized air to press the seals against an annular contact surface on the wheel hub to seal the first and second annular chambers when the tire is being inflated. The wheel hub is provided with first receiving means which open through the annular contact surface to receive air from the first annular chamber and conduct such air to the tire and second receiving means which also opens through the annular contact surface to receive air from the second annular chamber and conduct such air to the valve mounted on the wheel. The support body is mounted on the axle housing in a location radially within bolts which attach the wheel to the hub to reduce the rubbing speed of the seals on the contact surface to reducing wear caused by the contact pressure of the seals.

Rotary joint

A vehicle power braking system has separate left and right brakes () operable from a source of pressurized fluid () via relay valve means () controlled by separate left and right brake operating pedals () to provide steering assistance during a turn. The relay valve means delivers a brake operating pressure proportional to the depression of the associated brake operating pedal to separate left and right shift valves (), each shift valve being connected with its respective operating pedal () by a respective pilot line () so that when each pedal is operated the associated shift valve is opened by the respective pilot line pressure to supply the proportional pressure from the relay valve means to the respective brake (). The relay valve means comprises a single relay valve () which supplies both shift valves () and the pilot lines () are interconnected via a shuttle valve () so that the highest pilot pressure generated by operating the brake pedals () is applied to the single relay valve () so that each shift valve receives the same brake applying pressure proportional to said highest pilot pressure.

Power braking system with steering assist

A brake assembly is provided for a utility vehicle. After a brake operation, a clearance between a control member and an intermediate part and/or between a brake element and an intermediate part is adjusted by means of a displacement or restoring unit arranged in an intermediate part. Wear, and the associated change of clearance, can be compensated for by means of friction gripping devices, located respectively in the control member and in the brake element.
