For sorting particles of a mixed particulate material in dependence on their coefficients of sliding friction the particles are fed to a revolving endless belt which, from the feed point to the downstream discharge edge, has a length portion having a length which in dependence on the velocity of the revolving belt is so determined that only those particles of the mixed material which have the highest coefficient of sliding friction will be accelerated to the velocity of the belt while moving on the length portion, all particles having a relatively lower coefficient of sliding friction having a lower velocity at the discharge edge so that the particles which have been discharged will fly along different trajectories and are collected by correspondingly disposed devices.

Sorting process and apparatus

Disclosed is a process and apparatus to analyze metal particles to determine their composition and to generate a sorting signal. The particles are exposed to a pulsed laser beam by which they are partly vaporized to form a plasma so that the particles are cleaned and the cleaned area is subsequently partially vaporized by a pulsed laser beam to form a plasma. The spectral lines of the plasma are inspected for an identification of the composition of the metal particles. The required inspection rate of 30 particles per second can readily be achieved or even exceeded if a defined narrow wavelength range or a defined wavelength is filtered from the total radiation that is emitted by the plasma and the intensities of the filtered partial radiations are related to each other to obtain ratios, which are compared with adjustable limiting values. A sorting signal is derived from the result of said comparison. The inspection rate can be improved in that the partial radiation is subjected to a comparison only for a defined interval of time.

Scrap detector

A process for separating special steel components from lump shredder scrap includes first removing the ferromagnetic content from the shredder scrap and thereafter dividing the shredder scrap into a normal size fraction and an undersize fraction. The undersize fraction is then treated by separating the special steel content from the undersize fraction by a magnetic drum having a field strength above 0.2 tesla.

In the proposed process of sorting metal particles in dependence on their chemical composition the melting point and/or the melting temperature range are used to identify the particles. A radiation pyrometer integrally combined with a laser is used for this purpose and only a fraction of a second is required to test a given particle. A graph shows the melting temperatures of the metals and alloys frequently occurring in shredded scrap.
