A process for purifying a crude composition includes a monoterpene compound selected from the group consisting of monocyclic monoterpene alcohols, monocyclic monoterpene ketones, bicyclic epoxy monoterpenes and mixtures of two or more of the aforementioned compounds, such as preferably a monocyclic monoterpene alcohol. The process comprises performing a layer crystallization with a melt of the crude composition, and the melt of the crude composition subjected to the layer crystallization includes oxygen-containing solvent in a concentration of 20 ppm to 2% by weight. The oxygen-containing solvent is selected from the group consisting of water, C1-6-alcohols, C1-6-carboxylic acids, C1-6-ketones, C1-6-aldehydes, C1-12-ethers, C1-12-esters and mixtures of two or more of the aforementioned solvents.

Process for purifying a crude composition including a monoterpene compound, such as a monocyclic monoterpene alcohol, by layer melt crystallization

A process of manufacturing a polyester from cyclic ester monomer comprises the steps of: a) providing a cyclic ester, b) polymerizing the cyclic ester in the presence of a catalyst and optionally an initiator in a reactor to form a reaction mixture comprising polyester and unreacted cyclic ester, wherein after the polymerization at least one polymerization inhibitor is added to the reaction mixture, wherein the polymerization inhibitor is selected from the group consisting of monoimines, diimines, mono alkyl phosphates according to the formula RPOH, wherein R is a Clinear, branched or cyclic alkyl group, di alkyl phosphates according to the formula RPOH, wherein each R is independently a Clinear, branched or cyclic alkyl group or a combination thereof, and phosphate esters according to the general formula (I) wherein at least one of R', R&#x2033; and R&#x2033;&#x2032; has the general structure as in general formula (II) wherein n&#x3e;0 and Q is independently a Clinear, branched or substituted alkyl group, and R is independently an H or linear, branched, cyclic or substituted alkyl group or a phenyl group derivative, and wherein any of R&#x2032;, R&#x2033; and R&#x2033;&#x2032; not having the general structure as in general formula (II) is independently an H or a linear, branched, cyclic or substituted alkyl group or a phenyl group derivative.

Continuous method for manufacturing a polyester from cyclic ester monomer

A method for stabilizing a condensed phase composition in a process of manufacturing a polyester from cyclic ester monomer comprising the steps of devolatilizing a reaction mixture, which contains i) at least one polymerizable cyclic ester, ii) at least one catalyst and optionally at least one initiator, to produce a vapor stream and a molten residue, wherein the vapor stream includes mainly i) the at least one polymerizable cyclic ester and ii) the at least one catalyst and/or the at least one initiator and/or a reaction product or a residue of the at least one catalyst and/or the at least one initiator and condensing the vapor stream to form the condensed phase composition, wherein at least one polymerization inhibitor is added as stabilizer to the reaction mixture and/or to the condensed phase composition in an amount so that the degree of conversion of the polymerizable cyclic ester in the condensed phase composition is not more than 15%, wherein the degree of conversion is 100&#x25aa;(c0&#x2212;C)/c, wherein cis the initial concentration of the cyclic ester in the condensed phase composition obtained by the condensation of the vapor stream and Cis the concentration of the cyclic ester in the condensed phase composition after addition of 150 ppm of tin octoate as catalyst and of 100 mmol/kg of ethyl-hexanol as initiator to the condensed phase composition and a subsequent heat treatment of condensed phase composition under inert atmosphere conditions for 12 hours at 160&#xb0; C.

Liquid mixing collector and a method for its use

Methods of forming polycarbonate graft copolymers are provided. In particular, a polycarbonate polymer or copolymer containing allyl groups provides the backbone for the graft copolymer, and pendant chains are attached to the copolymer through the allyl groups. The graft copolymers exhibit a combination of high transparency, good graft levels, good scratch resistance, and/or good anti-fog properties.

Disclosed herein is a polycarbonate polymer comprising: an isosorbide unit, and an aliphatic unit different from the isosorbide unit, wherein the isosorbide unit and aliphatic unit are each carbonate, or a combination of carbonate and ester units and the aliphatic unit is derived from an aliphatic oligomer having a molecular weight of 900 to 4000.

Isosorbide-based polycarbonates, method of making, and articles formed therefrom

The present invention provides methods of forming carbamates, ureas, and isocyanates. In certain embodiments these methods include the step of reacting an amine with an ester-substituted diaryl carbonate to form an activated carbamate which can be further derivitized to form non-activated carbamate or a urea. The urea or carbamate can be subjected to a pyrolysis reaction to form isocyanate.

A method for forming a monomeric carbonate includes the step of combining a monofunctional alcohol or a difunctional diol with an ester-substituted diaryl carbonate to form a reaction mixture. Similarly, a method for forming a monomeric ester includes the step of combining a monofunctional carboxylic acid or ester with an ester-substituted diaryl carbonate to form a reaction mixture. Method for making carbonates and esters

A polycarbonate is provided that contains repeat units derived from isosorbide and a residue derived from an activated diaryl carbonate. The polycarbonate hasH-NMR peaks associated with the repeat units derived from isosorbide. The polycarbonate contains no more than a maximum allowable amount of sorbitol-derived color bodies. If these color bodies are present in the polycarbonate it has aH-NMR peak associated with the color bodies. The maximum allowable amount of color bodies are present when the integrated area of theH-NMR peak associated with the color bodies divided by the integrated areas of theH-NMR peaks associated with the repeat units derived from isosorbide is 0.025.

A melt polymerized polycarbonate comprising repeat units in the polycarbonate derived from the melt polymerization of monomers (II) and/or (III), monomer (IV), and optionally monomer (VIII), wherein monomers (II) and (III) are diaryl dihydroxy compounds, monomer (IV) is a sterically hindered dihydroxy compound, and monomer (VIII) is a non-sterically hindered dihydroxy diaryl compound; wherein the mole ratio of repeat units in the polycarbonate derived from monomers [(II)+(III)]:(IV):(VIII) is 15-70:1-85:0-50, the sum of the mole percent of repeat units in the polycarbonate derived from monomers [(II)+(III)]+(IV) is greater than or equal to 50 mole %, and the sum of the mole percent of units in the polycarbonate derived from monomers [(II)+(III)]+(IV)+(VIII) is 100 mole %; and wherein the polycarbonate has an L* value that is at least 1 L* unit value higher than the same polycarbonate in which monomer (IV) is replaced by bisphenol A.

A method of increasing the branching and polydispersity of a polycarbonate includes the steps of: (a) including in the polycarbonate at least one species of an alkyl substituted monomer, and (b) treating the polycarbonate at an elevated temperature and for a sufficient time to increase the branching and polydispersity relative to an otherwise equivalent polycarbonate without alkyl substituents.

Branched polycarbonate resins and processes to prepare the same

The present invention provides methods of producing high molecular weight polymer. A method of forming polycarbonate includes the step of combining in a reaction mixture a diaryl carbonate, a transesterification catalyst, an aliphatic dihydroxy compound, and a diacid compound in a reactor system. The temperature and pressure of the reactor system are adjusted to a first reactor setpoints and the reaction mixture is monitored to detect initiation of the exothermic oligomerization reaction. The reactor setpoint are adjusted to second reactor setpoints after detection of initiation of the exothermic oligomerization reaction. The reactor system is maintained at the second reactor setpoints to allow the reaction mixture to react to form an oligomer mixture. The oligomer mixture is then introduced to a polymerization reactor system operating under melt polymerization conditions sufficient to polymerize the oligomer mixture to a Mw of at least 9,000 g/mol (PC) and to remove the phenolic byproduct from the oligomer mixture to form polycarbonate.

Method of producing high molecular weight polymer

A method of making a polycarbonate is described. The method comprises melt reacting an ester-substituted diaryl carbonate and a multifunctional compound of the formula: in the presence of catalyst to form an oligomer comprising less than 2,000 ppm of an ester-linked terminal group, and melt polymerizing the oligomer to form a polycarbonate. Use of specific reaction conditions produces a polycarbonate having an Mw of greater than or equal to 25,000 g/mol as determined by gel-permeation chromatography relative to polystyrene standards. Polycarbonates comprising units derived from the multifunctional compound, including homopolycarbonates, aliphatic copolycarbonates further comprising units derived from an aromatic dihydroxy compound, and aliphatic polycarbonate-polyesters, are also disclosed, as are a thermoplastic composition and an article including the disclosed polycarbonates.
