For avoiding exterior, cooling-water-carrying ducts, an internal-combustion engine comprising two mutually opposite cylinder banks has integrated ducts for the feeding and removal of the cooling water to the cooling jackets and the cylinder heads.

A reciprocating engine has two cylinder banks arranged in a V-shape and a grear drive which originates from the crankshaft and leads to a drive shaft connected with the clutch as well as to camshafts and liquid pumps for cooling water and lubricating oil of the engine. The gear drive is designed such that the crankshaft, the camshafts and liquid pumps rotate in one rotating direction, and the output shaft and the clutch rotate in the other rotating direction.

In the case of a multi-cylinder reciprocating engine in a V-construction, the crankshaft drives the camshafts and an output shaft to the clutch in a center plane of the engine by means of gear drives. The crankshaft, also by means of gear drives, drives two identically designed pump units comprising a water pump and oil pumps which are mounted on the outside on the crankcase, symmetrically to the center plane of the engine.

In the case of a reciprocating engine of V-construction, a generator is arranged in the V-center. The outer walls of the engine power section bounding the V-cutout are adapted to the cylindrical housing of the generator and surround it at a radial distance.

A disengageable connection between an internal combustion engine and a propeller which serves for the drive of a gyroplane. The disengageable connection is a fluid coupling which includes a controllable oil circulatory system. The fluid coupling is supplied with oil by way of the oil circulatory system during the operation of the internal combustion engine. By contrast, the oil escapes out of the fluid coupling when the propeller operates under auto-rotation.

A lubricating arrangement attached end face at the engine housing of a reciprocating piston engine is surrounded by an oil pump housing which is composed of two housing parts cast of magnesium. The oil pumps are preassemblable in the oil pump housing. The couplings of the oil pumps and the lubricating connections are so constructed that the oil pump housing is easily assemblable at the engine housing as a structural unit.

A fuel-exchange poppet valve of a reciprocating internal-combustion engine is actuated by two electromagnets that, in an alternating way, are energized periodically to attract an armature disk arranged between them. The armature disk is fastened at an armature that is coupled to a one-armed fuel-exchange poppet valve control lever. The control lever is pivotally moved back and forth against the spring tension of a torsional bar spring to open and close a poppet valve.

In a reciprocating piston internal combustion engine, an upwardly arcuately shaped combustion space is formed in the cylinder head, which contains suspended valves arranged V-shaped. The valves are moved as close as possible to the combustion space boundary and form narrow spaces with respect thereto. The radii of the transitional arcs from the valve-end faces to the combustion space boundary increase continuously from the narrow spaces in both circumferential directions of the combustion space boundary and reach their maximum values in the center plane between the valves. The combustion space curvature is matched to the predetermined angles of inclination of the valves.

An apparatus and method for operating a piston driven internal combustion engine having an exhaust gas turbocharger, provides for the exhaust gases of the cylinders to be conducted to an afterburner chamber and subsequently to the exhaust gas turbine of the turbocharger when the motor vehicle is coasting, i.e., when the motor vehicle and engine are being driven by the vehicle's inertia, with the ignition for the cylinders being turned off and the charging air being introduced into the afterburner chamber. The noncombusted fuel/air mixture from the cylinders is combusted in the afterburner chamber with the additional charging air to thereby bring the turbocharger to its full output for reacceleration of the engine.

Method and apparatus for operating a piston driven internal combustion

An apparatus for cooling valve seat rings which are arranged in a cylinder head of an internal-combustion engine, the valve seat rings being surrounded by annular ducts through which a cooling medium can flow. For the forced circulation of the cooling medium in the annular ducts of the valve seat rings, a first guiding duct is connected to feeding lines of the annular ducts and to the output side of a pump and a second guiding duct is connected to discharge lines and to the intake side of the pump.

A fuel supply device includes a housing having at least one injection valve which is held at both ends by plug-in devices. At the end remote from the injection opening the injection valve cooperates with a holding element which includes fuel ducts and which has a head portion in a bore formed in the housing. The bore is connected to a fuel line. In addition, spaced apart sealing elements are provided on the head portion to define a fuel supply area between the holding element and the bore.

The chain drive of a reciprocating-piston internal combustion engine is tensioned on the loose strand by a double-armed, rotatably mounted tension bar cooperating with a chain tensioner. A sliding bar bears against the driving strand. A similar base member is used for the tensioning bar and the sliding bar.

The crankshaft of an internal combustion engine for vehicles, especially motorcycles, is mounted between upper and lower parts of a crankcase. The crank webs of the shaft rotate partially in the lower part which is in the form of an oil space. An oil sump is also provided in the lower part at a lower level than the oil space. The lower part of the crankcase has a curved floor formed at a distance from the crank webs, and such floor has one or more oil return ducts therein. The ducts are disposed in the vicinity of the path of movement of the crank webs. The ducts are, in fact, opposite the crank webs and each of the ducts have a slope to them. Each of the ducts extend between walls of bearing seats provided in the engine.

A one-piece cylinder block for a water-cooled internal combustion engine with two rows of cylinders in a V-arrangement has a longitudinal duct for supplying cooling water. The block is preferably made by a diecasting process. The longitudinal duct is connected to the coolant spaces of the cylinders which are located between a cylinder sleeve and an outer jacket surrounding the latter. The longitudinal duct is disposed between the rows of cylinders in the cylinder block and at least one opening is provided in the region of the coolant spaces for each cylinder. These openings are cast in the casing walls of the cylinder block. Since they are disposed directly adjacent the longitudinal duct, they extend essentially radially to the cylinders.

A water pump for a reciprocating piston internal combustion engine is driven by a shaft located between the camshaft and crankshaft. The intermediate shaft which is driven by and coupled to the crankshaft at one wall of the crank housing. The water pump is located in a remote wall of the crank housing, which itself forms one half of the pump containment. A dish-shaped housing half screws into the remote wall to contain the pump. The intermediate shaft is connected to the pump wheel of the water pump by a hollow shaft which passes longitudinally through the crank housing. Together with the bearings, securing elements, sealing rings and a bearing flange, the shaft forms a structural unit which may be pre-assembled and easily inserted into the engine.
