A method and an arrangement for rolling hot wide strips from continuously cast thin slabs in successive steps of operation of a rolling line which includes a continuous finishing train. One or more casting lines and individual thin slabs are severed from the cast strand. The thin slabs are homogenized and adjusted to rolling temperature in an equalizing furnace and the thin slabs are transferred from the equalizing furnace to the rolling line. Roller-type turning furnaces provided in each of the casting lines and in the rolling line are use by turning the roller-type turning furnaces toward each other into positions which are inclined relative to the casting and rolling lines in the manner of switches for alternatingly conveying thin slabs from one of the casting lines through the roller-type turning furnaces into the rolling line.

Method and arrangement for rolling hot wide strips from continuously

Hot-rolled strips or sections from continuously cast primary material are manufactured in successive work steps in a closed process and arrangement chain. The endless continuously cast primary material is divided after solidification into individual slab pieces of predetermined length. The slab pieces are heated in an equalizing furnace to rolling temperature and are then rolled into the predetermined final dimensions. For bridging a comparatively short interruption, for example, a ten-minute interruption of the rolling process, a slab piece obtained from the uninterrupted casting process is moved into a buffer zone of the equalizing furnace. For bridging relatively long interruptions of the rolling process, primary material obtained during the uninterrupted casting process is divided into slab pieces having a predetermined length, the slab pieces are moved out of the process chain by a furnace part constructed as a transverse conveyor and the slab pieces are conveyed into a side line laterally and parallel offset next to the production line. The slab pieces are stored as necessary and stacked in a holding furnace and, after the interruption has been eliminated, the slab pieces are returned in the reverse direction into the process chain.

Method and apparatus for manufacturing hot-rolled strips or sections

A cutting apparatus for cutting the unwound end of a coiled strip having a wedge for lifting the coil end away from the coil as the coil is rotated in a direction of unwinding, a strip guide surface for supporting the lifted coil end and a rotary cutting tool movable along a feed guide across the unwound strip thereby severing the unwound strip from the coil without the need to plastically deform the coil by bending. The feed guide may be on a support member, and the support member and the wedge are pivotable independently about an axis parallel to the axis of the coil.

Apparatus for severing the end of a metal strip wound in a coil

A straightening machine has upper and lower sets of straightening rollers, each backed up by back-up rollers. The back-up rollers are mounted on bearing supports. In one set of straightening rollers, the bearing supports extend parallel to the rollers and all the back-up rollers associated with one straightening roller are mounted on a common support. In the other set of straightening rollers, the bearing supports extend at right angles to the rollers, and each support mounts back-up rollers, each of which is associated with a different one of the straightening rollers. Each of the bearing supports can be moved towards or away from the gap between the upper and lower sets of straightening rollers.
