Systems and methods for generating an image of the surroundings of an articulated vehicle are provided. According to an aspect of the invention, a processor determines a relative position between a first vehicle of an articulated vehicle and a second vehicle of the articulated vehicle; receives a first image from a first camera arranged on the first vehicle and a second image from a second camera arranged on the second vehicle; and combines the first image and the second image based on the relative position between the first vehicle and the second vehicle to generate a combined image of surroundings of the articulated vehicle.

A plurality of markers are arbitrarily placed around the object and configured to measure a plurality of distances between one another. From at least one image from one or more cameras, a controller is configured to visually identify at least two markers which define a coordinate system. Based on the measured plurality of distances between markers and the visually identified markers, the controller generates calibration information as an output, saved in the form of a look-up table, which will be retrieved and used when a display device generates a bird's-eye view for a viewer.

A method for determining a presence of an occupant within a vehicle includes capturing, via a driver facing camera, video image data, including a plurality of image frames of a field-of-view of the driver facing camera. At least one area-of-interest within the image frames is defined, and a foreground pixel count of each image frame of each area-of-interest is determined. At each Nth image frame, an occupancy for each area of interest is determined based at least in part on the foreground pixel count. The occupancy indicates whether the occupant is present or absent in the respective area-of-interest. A history of the occupancy determination for each area-of-interest is maintained, and a final status for each area-of-interest is determined based on the respective history of occupancy. External indicators are initiated based on the final status determination.

A method for providing event data from cross-referenced data memories of an on-vehicle event detection and reporting system includes cross-referencing event data stored in an event buffer with continuous video data stored in a continuous DVR memory. A request for additional data corresponding to a detected driving or vehicle event may be received by the on-vehicle system, where the request includes an event identifier corresponding to a detected driving or vehicle event. The requested additional data is identified in the DVR memory using the event identifier and based on said cross-referencing between the event data with the continuous video data stored in the DVR memory. The identified additional data is then transmitted from the DVR memory for display on a user computer.

The image obtaining unit receives first image data representative of a first image, and the memory stores intrinsic image coordinate transformation data representative of an intrinsic mapping between the first image data and first display data representative of an uncompensated bird's eye view image of the peripheral area of the associated vehicle. The situational compensation selectively modifies the intrinsic mapping as an adjusted intrinsic mapping between the first image data and the first display data in accordance with a signal representative of the one or more relationships of the associated vehicle relative to the peripheral area.

The system includes a communications gateway configured for electronic communication with a vehicle control system of the tractor-trailer and a computing device configured for communication with the vehicle control system through the communications gateway. The device is configured to display an instruction to a user to perform a task of the pre-trip inspection and receive an input associated with the task from the user. The input is indicative of an operating characteristic of the tractor-trailer. The device may be further configured to determine whether the operating characteristic meets a predetermined condition. The device is further configured to transmit an instruction to the vehicle control system through the communications gateway when the operating characteristic does not meet the predetermined condition. The instruction establishes a restriction on operation of the tractor-trailer.

A controller is adapted to receive respective images from a sensors of a first vehicle. The images provide a gapless view along, and within a predetermined perpendicular distance away from, a side of the first vehicle. Movement of a second vehicle along, and within the predetermined perpendicular distance away from, the side of the first vehicle, is detected based on at least one of the images. A position of a front of the second vehicle is predicted based on the movement of the second vehicle. An image sequence is recorded at the position.

A system and method is described in which vehicles are configured to collect driver and vehicle event data, selectively compress and encode the collected driver and vehicle event data, and communicate the compressed and encoded data wirelessly to one or more telematics service providers. Servers poll this driver event data periodically, process it, and present multiple methods to end users by which they are able to view and analyze it. The present system permits fleet managers to use this driver event data, received through a report or notification, or pulled directly from a web-based portal, to monitor, correct or reward driver behavior, and to implement driver education and training programs.
