Systems for controlling hydrogen purity in a power plant system are disclosed. In one embodiment, a hydrogen control system for a generator housing includes: a mass flow control system fluidly connected to the generator housing, the mass flow control system being configured to measure a flow rate of a gas mixture extracted from the generator housing and modify the flow rate of the gas mixture across a range of flow rates; and a vent conduit fluidly connected to the mass flow control system, the vent conduit for receiving a portion of the gas mixture from the mass flow control system and feeding the portion of the gas mixture to an outlet.

A hydrogen cooled generator includes a lubricant drain system. The lubricant drain system includes a hydrogen detraining tank having a hollow interior portion. A sensor is operatively mounted in the hydrogen detraining tank. The sensor is configured and disposed to detect an interface zone between an amount of lubricant and an amount of hydrogen gas in the hollow interior portion. A drain line is fluidly coupled to the hydrogen detraining tank. The drain line includes a first end portion that is exposed in the hollow interior portion and a second end portion. A valve is mounted in the drain line. A controller is operatively connected to the sensor and the valve. The controller is configured to selectively open the valve allowing a portion of the amount of lubricant to flow from the hollow interior portion when the interface zone is above the first end portion of the drain line.

A turbine includes a plurality of inner shell sections mounting first and second stage nozzle and shroud portions. The inner shell sections are pinned to an outer containment shell formed of sections to preclude circumferential movement of the inner shell relative to the outer shell and enable thermal expansion and contraction of the inner shell relative to the outer shell. Positive bucket tip clearance control is afforded by passing a thermal medium about the inner shell in heat transfer relation with the shrouds about the first and second stage bucket tips, the thermal medium being provided from a source of heating/cooling fluid independent of the turbine. Access is provided to the rotor and turbine buckets by removing the outer and inner shell sections.

A turbine includes a plurality of inner shell sections mounting first and second stage nozzle and shroud portions. An outer housing surrounds the inner shell sections and includes at least two outer shell sections overlying the inner shell sections. The inner shell sections are releasably connected to one another and the outer shell sections are releasably connected to one another. Upon removing an outer shell section, an access opening is provided through which an uppermost inner shell section is removed. Rollers are provided between the lower outer and inner shell sections so that the lower inner shell section is rotated into the access opening and can be removed through the access opening.

A method of constructing a turbine nozzle with a plurality of nozzle segments minimizes structurally induced excitation forces. The method includes inputting structural characteristics of each of the plurality of nozzle segments, theoretically selecting a random sequencing of the plurality of nozzle segments, calculating a relative harmonic content of per revolution excitation forces of the sequence in accordance with the structural characteristics, theoretically exchanging nozzle segments in pairs to change the sequence of the plurality of nozzle segments, testing the new sequences repeatedly until all possible sequences have been tested, and selecting a sequence that best prevents structurally induced excitation forces. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the harmonic distortion caused by structural features of a particular unit design is considered as well as the swirl effect that occurs as the gas translates through the turbine. After the best sequence is determined, the nozzle segments can then be placed into the structural casing.

A power generation system comprising a gas turbine, a steam turbine and a generator are mounted on a foundation in substantial axial alignment and connected by a single shaft. A thrust bearing is located on the shaft in one of the gas turbine and steam turbine. Whichever of the gas turbine and steam turbine contains the thrust bearing is flexibly secured to the foundation, and the other of the gas turbine and the steam turbine, as well as the generator, are rigidly secured to the foundation. A pair of rigid tie rods also extend between the steam and gas turbines, parallel to the shaft, to maintain a predetermined axial distance between the turbines, while allowing relative movement in a plane perpendicular to the shaft.
