A head restraint for rear seats of convertibles is attached to a U-shaped roll-over bar and can be displaced with the roll-over bar. The roll-over bar can be raised from a lowered position into a support position and spans to a large extent the width of the interior of the vehicle. The lateral legs of the roll-over bar are equally curved along a rear wall of the rear seat rest with a center of curvature on the seat side of the rear seat rest.

In a safety device for the occupant of the central rear seat position in a motor vehicle the arm-rest present between the front seats is used for his or her effective protection in the case of a frontal collision. A pivoting drive, which engages the arm-rest, pivots the arm-rest out of its position extending approximately horizontally in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle towards the front seat back-rest in the case of a crash. The pivoting drive is connected to a sensor which detects a vehicle deceleration, and which trips the pivoting drive to erect the arm-rest when a prescribed value of the integrated vehicle deceleration is exceeded.

A side guard or lateral protection arrangement for motor vehicles, wherein at least one reinforcement, extending substantially in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, is arranged within each of the side doors. The reinforcements are braced in case of a force effective in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, with each end directly or indirectly against a component fixedly mounted to the vehicle or against a further reinforcement associated with an adjacent door. This bracing takes place in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. The reinforcements are axially adjustable in their lengths so as to bridge a space between an end of the reinforcement means and the component fixedly mounted to the vehicle or further reinforcement, which space results from manufacturing tolerances in the construction of the motor vehicle.
